Thoroughly Modern Millie is Thoroughly Entertaining

News Progress Posted on June 28, 2017 by webmasterJune 27, 2017

The music was written by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Dick Scanlon and it was based on the 1956 British musical, “Chrysanthemum”. The pre-Broadway promo starred Kristin Chenoweth as Millie and the redoubtable Bea Arthur as Mrs. Meers. It had nearly 1,000 performances and won six Tony awards including Best Musical and Best Actress.

Basically, it is a small town Kansas girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York in the 20’s to marry for money and not love. She takes delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel run by a washed-up stage star who is reduced to a life of crime in a white slavery ring in China.

Having never seen this musical before I came prepared to be wowed. Thoroughly Modern Millie is thoroughly, magically magnificent.

The musical opens on a beautiful blue and grey New York backdrop, and above the stage is a marquee which sets the scenes and also translates the Chinese language of some characters so pay attention to the marquee! Read More

News Progress Posted on June 28, 2017 by webmasterJune 27, 2017

•June 28, 2017•

In a 7-0 vote, the Sullivan Community Unit School District #300 Board of Education approved the hiring of a new superintendent at a special meeting Thursday, June 22.

Ted Walk, who has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal in the district over the last 11 years, will begin as Sullivan’s superintendent July 1 under a four-year contract at $122,500 annual salary. He is replacing Brad Tuttle who recently accepted a position with the Jerseyville School District.

The hiring of Walk follows a search by the district that included input from a meeting of various stakeholders, including members of the community, faculty, and staff in order to determine the qualities that the next superintendent of Sullivan schools should possess. Utilizing the results from this meeting, the board reviewed applications and supporting documentation and conducted interviews which led to the selection of Walk as the district’s next superintendent. In his final budget hearing as superintendent of Sullivan schools Brad Tuttle reminded the board that the state’s budget problems continue to cause problems in education.

County Board Offers Insurance Benefit; Approves SA as County Ethics Advisor

News Progress Posted on June 21, 2017 by webmasterJune 20, 2017

Coles-Moultrie 911 is Complete

Moultrie County Board offered a life insurance benefit to employees and approved the state’s attorney as the county’s ethics advisor at the June 15 meeting.

County board chair Dave McCabe recommended approval of Cincinnati Life Insurance Company to offer a payroll deductible guaranteed life insurance benefit up to $100,000. McCabe noted every employee would be contacted and would need to approve or opt out of the program. The board unanimously agreed to offer the life insurance program.

With the county board in non-compliance with state ethics changes, Chairman McCabe recommended the state’s attorney’s office be ethics advisor for the county. He explained a three person ethics committee would also need to be appointed along with an ethics ordinance update.

Road and bridge committee chair Kevin McReynolds recommended accepting the low bid of $136,098.10 from Microsurfacing Contractors LLC for a section of County Highway 13 in Marrowbone Township. The board approved unanimously. Read More

Stellar Beauty and the Beast Performance at The Little Theatre on the Square

News Progress Posted on June 14, 2017 by webmasterJune 13, 2017

Indeed, researchers estimate this story to be at least 4,000 years old with its origins in the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche. Written in 1740 by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, the original story had no Gaston or talking furniture - these are figments of Disney’s imagination.

In the 1700’s marriages were still arranged and this story was specifically intended to prepare young French girls for such a marriage.

Almost every country has a variant folktale of Beauty and the Beast, and it has been adapted for film (three times), stage, TV, opera and even a ballet.

That said, I can’t gush enough stars for this stellar production, its incredibly talented cast and especially the set and stage crew.

A narrator begins the prologue of how the Prince is turned into the Beast as the Prince, Beggar Woman and the Enchantress pantomime the action on stage. The curtain descends and rises again on a breathtaking French square as the villagers colorful costumes and carrying wonderful props bring the town to life. Belle (played by Samantha Matthews - she of the translucent skin and sterling voice) enters as does her father Maurice (Pat Swearington) and their loving and devoted relationship is revealed in the song “No Matter What”. Maurice has invented a clever wood shopping contraption for the science fair. Pat Swearington in both voice and mannerisms makes a most believable, devoted father. Read More

Five trailers were filled to capacity and weighing in by tonnage. Those working the event were (L-R): Mike Cain, Brandon Beckwith, Kyler Lane, Clint Thompson, Mike Piper, Alex Bailey, Travis Hugues, and Luke Goss.
