Summer’s newest splashing surprise

News Progress Posted on June 19, 2024 by webmasterJune 19, 2024

by Megan Russell

Next to the legion building at the Wyman Park there has been come construction started where the city is building a splash pad within the park. Splash pads are great ways for people of all ages and all accessibility to access the water and cool off in the summer heat.  Over June 12th-14th there was more activity from the construction site, getting more of the project done day by day. The difference from the previous weekend with the Dash and Bash was unrecognizable from where it stood within the active construction days. The most recent development for the project was the water and proper sewage components being installed and covered back over so the already laid system couldn’t be damaged by outside sources.

Patience and consistency help fishermen land the big fish and the same qualities worked for the Lake Shelbyville area as the Illinois High School Association selected the lake as the next home of the IHSA State Bass Fishing Tournament. The tournament, begun in 2009 has spent 15 years at Lake Carlyle. The new agreement promises the tournament to Lake Shelbyville for five years.

“We are excited to start a new chapter as the IHSA Bass Fishing State Finals transition to Lake Shelbyville in 2005,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson.

Shelbyville High School Principal Kyle Ladd first brought up the possibility of hosting the tournament in 2022. After meeting with the City Council, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, and the Chamber of Commerce, and the Okaw Valley School District, Ladd said the group decided to bid on the tournament. The Sullivan CUSD #300 school board met this past Monday for their regularly scheduled June meeting. Joshua Green was absent for the fourth time of this school year. Some of these agenda items included renewing the food service contract with Sysco as well as the intergovernmental agreement with the City of Sullivan on the use of a school resource officer. Superintendent Walk pointed out that the district is fortunate to have an officer on school grounds every minute that students are present. Read More

Lehman (center) listens to Coach John Bertetto during the pole vault prelims.

It was a cool Saturday evening in April when students and families gathered by Wyman Lake’s pier to take pictures before prom officially kicked off at 8:00pm. Having spent nearly twenty minutes taking pictures of all varieties, four track relay teammates came together for a photo. Seniors Easton England, Owen Hussong, Hayden Moody, along with sophomore Johnny Iacobazzi stood smiling as the 4x800m relay team.

After several pictures were taken, a voice from the side said, “Now let’s get one with the number one alternate.” It was Rhett “Cowboy” Lehman. As he took his place in the middle of the four, he said, “I’m always ready at a moment’s notice.” Lehman’s mom, Erica Lehman, turned to the other parents and said, “It’s true. He is always ready.” With his signature cowboy hat, Lehman grinned at the cameras with his four other teammates. Read More
