Moultrie County graduates received a special gift this year-175 years of county history. Captured Moments, the pictorial history of Moultrie County 1843-2018, was given to some 225 graduating seniors from Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond, Sullivan and Okaw Valley high schools.
Restaurants were serving food and alcohol in designated outdoor areas following an executive order issued by Mayor Richard Glazebrook. During the May 26 city council meeting the mayor explained that the order approving outdoor dining and drinks is to facilitate the June 1 phased opening in Illinois.
Windsor High School seniors graduated in individual ceremonies on Thursday, May 28. WHS graduates reserved an appointment time for themselves and four family members. The on Friday, May 29 the graduates paraded through town following the Windsor Harvest Picnic Parade route to all the community to celebrate the seniors’ accomplishments.
Country Financial Representative Elizabeth Houser announced Sullivan Fire Protection District as the 2020 recipient of her Country Financial Operation Helping Heroes donation. She presented the donation for $1,500 to the department to assist with the purchase of digital thermometers and blood pressure cuffs.

One Sullivan resident has taken an important story in her life and published it to share it with others. Dawnaya Key was born and raised in Sullivan and is currently raising her own children in the house she grew up in.
The book is titled Tomate and is described on the cover as an inspirational story that knows no age limit or language barrier. When asked about the title, which means tomato in Spanish, Key said that you find out the meaning of the title in the first chapter.
The story is one that Key has been telling people for years when asked why she became a teacher. She has been teaching upper level and advanced placement Spanish at Mt. Zion High School for eight years and has been in the teaching field for 10 years.
She started the publication process about a week before the state shutdown due to COVID-19. “Managing remote learning, two small children and a book has been challenging,” she said.
She was encouraged by Joyce Russell to write the book when she was student teaching in Mt. Zion. Russell heard her story and told her that she had to write a book. “Because of her, I started to jot down things,” Key said.
Much of the story took place at what used to be Sullivan Health Care, and Key said there is a lot of the Sullivan community in the book. When people ask her why she’s a teacher, she shows them photos of her and an older woman. “I am who I am today because of this woman and her story,” Key said.
She went on to say that she did not write the book for anything but to share her story and faith and share faith with others. “It feels like a weight has been lifted, that the journey to write this book has been completed,” Key said.
The book is dedicated to her children, Zeryk and Zeya, and her past, present and future students. Key related that she wanted to write the book for her children and their children.
Being an author is something that she is still getting used to. “It’s surreal to be able to put my name in a Google search and have my book come up,” she said.
Now that the book has been published in English, Key said that she would eventually like to republish it in Spanish so that Spanish speaking people may hear her story. Her ultimate goal is to have an interview on the Spanish version of Good Morning America called Despierta America. “I would love to sit on stage and be interviewed and share this story,” Key said.

The Sullivan City Council held a special meeting in closed session Monday, December 21 to interview candidates for the position of interim Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvements.
After returning from closed session, the council appointed Doug Booker as interim Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvements. He will serve until May 10, 2021, and there will be a person elected at the consolidated general election on April 6 to fill the remaining two years of the term. Read More

Clint A. Hector, 37, of Sullivan, charged with aggravated arson, a Class X felony and criminal damage to property, a Class 3 felony, appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing.
According to a probable cause affidavit by Officer Bryce Farris, on November 29 at 11:52 pm CECOM dispatched a structure fire at 17 Chad Ave in Sullivan. While en route, Officer Johnson advised that he was on scene and observed a shed in the backyard of 17 Chad Ave to be fully involved. Read More

Santa Arrives in Findlay
Santa Claus waves from a Findlay Fire Department truck as he travels through Findlay on Saturday. Starting at 4 pm that day a parade of fire department vehicles made their way through town with sirens going and traveled several streets in Findley with the jolly man himself waving and occasionally stopping for photos with children.
