10 Bones on the Marrowbone Barbecue Cookoff
The Second Annual 10 Bones on the Marrowbone Barbecue Cookoff was held in downtown Bethany on Saturday, April 30. This year’s winners in the steak category were: first place-2 Big Fellas Getting Sauced, second place-Team Willie, third place-Grumpy Old Ham. In the chicken category winners were: first place-2 Big Fellas Getting Sauced, second place-TB’s Pork and Smoke and third place-Smoking Oma and Papa. In the ribs category first place went to TB’s Pork and Smoke, second place-Grumpy Old Ham and third place-Team Willie. In the pork category first place went to 2 Big Fellas Getting Sauced, second place to Smoking Oma and Papa and third place was Grumpy Old Ham. The three meat overall winner was grand champion 2 Big Fellas Getting Sauced, second place was TB’s Pork and Smoke and third place was Grumpy Old Ham. Public Hearing Held for Wind Energy Systems

A public hearing regarding Wind Energy Conversion Systems in Moultrie County was held Monday, April 25, in the commons room at Sullivan High School with a total of 75 people in attendance. The public hearing allowed those who wanted to speak on the wind energy topic to do so. Individual comments were restricted to three minutes, and after everyone on the list had spoken, those who chose were allowed to speak again.
The public hearing was scheduled for a three-hour time frame, but after one hour and thirty minutes, the hearing was adjourned due to no one else wanting to speak. Those who were unable to attend that meeting may email lori.barringer@co.moultrie.il.us with their written responses. Read More

Courthouse Roofing Project Underway

It is visually apparent that work is being done on the roof of the Moultrie County Courthouse. The project is expected to be finished by the end of July and will take care of leaks in the roof. The cost for the project is $239,000.
According to records that Maintenance Dept. head Rick Matthews was able to access, the construction of the courthouse began in 1904, and a ceremony celebrating its completion was held November 12, 1906. He continued to say that the courthouse was initially funded by a $25,000 tax levy in 1904, 1905 and 1906. Matthews said that he will be donating the old clock motor and wood clock hands from the courthouse clock to the Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society.

The Moultrie County Republican held their Lincoln Day dinner at the Sullivan VFW on Saturday, April 23. During that evening there were thirteen guest speakers who are running in the upcoming election in June. Pictured is U.S. Rep Rodney Davis addressing the room that night.

On Good Friday, the Bethany Ministerial Alliance hosted the Stations of the Cross on Main Street in Bethany. The path started at Bethany Free Methodist Church and ended across the street where the grocery store used to be. At various locations on Main Street the group stopped for responsive readings, prayer and singing. Pictured are Marge Overlot (left) and Pastor Rob Roy (right).

On Saturday, April 23, the Spores ‘n More festival was held in Windsor. Pictured are smallest mushroom winner Kynlee Hopkins (left) and largest mushroom winner Chris Pesch. Hopkins mushroom was a total of 24 mm in size. Pesch found a mushroom that was a total of 382 mm.

Kelly Wheeler and Lori Curry had a variety of baked goods for sale by donation to benefit the Windsor Post Prom. Other activities during Spores ‘n More included a meal at the Windsor American Legion, vendor fair at The Red Barn and announcement of the mushroom hunt winners.

ALAH School District Hires New Atwood-Hammond Grade School Principal

Amish representatives Richard and Daniel were present, as well as the new recommendation for the Atwood-Hammond Grade School principal, Chris Forman and his family at the recent school board meeting of the ALAH Community School District held Wednesday, April 20 in the high school cafeteria.
Superintendent Shannon Cheek introduced Forman, who is married with two children, and gave a brief statement of his background and work history. Forman was born in the Jacksonville area and lived in Mahomet for 14 years. He also worked in Beijing, China for two years. After the closed session of the meeting, the board hired him as the new Atwood-Hammond Grade School principal beginning with the 2022-2023 school year. Read More

City Council Approves Employees Raises, Purchase of Transformers

The Sullivan City Council approved employee raises during Monday’s meeting. A motion was made by Commissioner Abbey Sherwood to approve a 75-cent raise for full time, non-union employees. Commissioner Chuck Woodworth spoke on the fact that water plant employees have been under union negotiations since 2020 and have not received raises for the past three years. He said that he wanted to give those raises to those employees. The total amount for the five employees is $13,018.82 which they have not received. “I think we should move forward with this,” Woodworth said. A vote was taken to amend the initial proposed motion, and a motion was proposed to include the water plant employees. Both were passed. Read More
