Staff at Sullivan Elementary School recognizes students who go above and beyond expectations by giving them a “Gold Slip.” Gold Slip winners for the month of October are pictured. From left to right they are Addison Hullum who stayed after lunch to clean up someone else’s ketchup spill to keep the cafeteria safe and clean, Elijah Dalbey who noticed that a few students were sitting on the side at recess not playing and invited each student to play ball tag with him and his other friends, Donovan Collins and Brady Beck who volunteered to write an extra Veterans Day invitation, willingly giving up recess to do so and Issac Reider who volunteered to give his jacket to a classmate who was very cold in their classroom.

The Habitat for Humanity subdivision is getting additional landscaping courtesy of the Sullivan Rotary Club. On Tuesday, Nov. 7 club members planted 13 Sycamore and Tulip Poplar trees at various homes in the subdivision. Pictured from left to right: Dennis Ozier, Julia Beals, Susan Rauch, Rotary president Dan Fultz and Dave Cole. The tree planting program is assisted by a District Rotary grant the local club received.

Moultrie Democrats Turn Out in Force to Meet Candidates

Moultrie County Democrats turned out in force at the Sullivan American Legion Post 68 Friday, November 3.

Event coordinator County Clerk Georgia England noted that more than 150 people enjoyed the spaghetti dinner in which a variety of local and area Democrat candidates participated.

Featured speaker Glenn Poshard was not among candidates but delivered a passionate case for the Democratic party’s commitment to pay as you go budgets, equal education, equal justice and reminded the audience how unions built the middle class and Great Society of the 1960s.

Dr. Poshard was the former U.S. Representative in the 19th district which included Moultrie County as well as past governor candidate and President of SIU. Read More

Community Multi-use Path Seeks IDOT Funding

A proposed Wyman Park urban multi-use path project will be reviewed by the Sullivan City Council during special session Monday, Nov. 13.

Held at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library at 6:30 p.m. those interested may comment on the project. A federal grant application to the Illinois Department of Transportation is from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement. Read More

Enjoying one of the last legal pleasures and donating to a good cause is a gift giver’s delight.

So when Devon Flesor comes to Sullivan on Nov. 18, the gifts will flow with a chocolate flavor.

Flesor’s Candy Kitchens returns to Cathrine’s Gallery Gifts and More in Sullivan for the annual holiday candy sale Saturday, Nov. 18 for the benefit of the CEFS Moultrie County Food Bank. Twenty percent of candy sales that day goes to the food pantry.

There will be a variety of gift wrapped delights prepared on that day just in time for Thanksgiving (there will be turkey shaped confections). Plenty of the sweet treats will be on hand for Christmas giving to friends and family who appreciate handmade confections in all shapes and forms.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 Flesor’s will be at Cathrine’s in Sullivan with gift selections from their 50 varieties of candies including Paul’s Pecan Favorites, created by grandfather Gus Flesor in the early 1900s. Read More

Joins County Treasurer Race

Diane Waggoner will be running as a Democratic candidate for Moultrie County Treasurer in the March 2018 primary election.

She brings almost 20 years of banking experience to the position and has worked at First Community Bank of Moultrie County, formerly known as First National Bank of Sullivan, since 2003.

From 1998 until 2003 she was employed with First-Mid Illinois Bank and Trust of Sullivan. Throughout these years Waggoner acquired a wealth of knowledge in finance as teller to her current job title of new accounts. Gaining this banking knowledge throughout these years qualifies her for Moultrie County Treasurer. Read More

County Personnel Committee Recommends Salary Increase for Courthouse Employees

Rejects Bonus Plan

The Moultrie County board personnel committee agreed to recommend an additional $300 annual salary increase for county employees to the county board for vote Nov. 9. They had previously approved $1000 annual increases in the tentative 2018 budget

A motion by Gary Smith and seconded by Kevin McReynolds  approved the additional $300 with Ron White dissenting.

The recommendation for across the board raises was prompted following requests from Supervisor of Assessment Lori Barringer to give three full time office employees a one time $2000 bonus.

Circuit Clerk Cindy Braden also proposed a one time $2000 bonus for eight employees.

Motions for both bonuses failed for lack of a second. Read More

Sullivan Scouts Wyatt and Will Miller place a bag on the door of a Sullivan home during the annual Scouting for Food bag distribution. Residents are asked to place any items they wish to donate to the Moultrie County Food Pantry in bags or boxes and place them where they may be seen from the road by 9 a.m. Saturday, November 11 for pickup.
