Sparrows Annual Gift Giving Program, 2015

Lovington’s charitable non-profit Sparrows completed their annual gift giving program over the weekend. A dozen people gathered at the East End Tavern in downtown Lovington to wrap gifts for 120 children and 11 challenged adults.
The annual Christmas auction was held Dec. 5 with the funds raised used for the toy and clothing shopping for the 120 people on the Sparrow shop list. In addition to wrapped gifts which were delivered Sunday, Lovington residents were also allowed to choose from extra clothing and toys which were on display at the Lovington Ambulance Service Saturday.

The final Moultrie County Food pantry delivery from Hydro-Gear’s annual drive was made Wednesday, December 9.
Hydro Gear employees not only responded with food donations, but generated substantial cash donations to help the food pantry.
According to Hydro Gear Communications specialist Kathleen Blievernicht, employee collections totaled 1640 pounds of food for 2015.
Hydro Gear’s participation includes contributions from some 800 employees.
Blievernicht explained Hydro-Gear employees rallied to support the Moultrie County Food Pantry while having fun with an NFL theme in 2015.
Employees were players on eight NFL teams. Teams then were scheduled to play each other. Points were given to food items in most need and donations accepted were counted each week. Read More

Sullivan High School principal Erik Young has announced that seven Sullivan High School students of the class of 2016 have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars.
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), the state agency committed to helping to make college accessible and affordable for Illinois families, bestows this prestigious recognition to top Illinois high school students annually. This year more than 19,000 elite honorees join the other top state students honored for their academic achievements since the designation was first introduced in 1958.
Illinois State Scholars possess strong academic potential and are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank. State Scholars rank in approximately the top 10 percent of high school seniors, representing 652 high schools across the state. Read More

Windsor FFA Chapter Applies Vet and Food Science
The Windsor FFA chapter went to Clinton for the Vet and Food Science CDEs Dec. 2. Participants were Tucker Cripe, Bailey Fleshner, and Raymond Miller and activities included the proper carrying of a cat, filling a syringe, filling a prescription, tying a knot, equipment identification, and a written test. The team placed sixth overall.
Participants in Food Science were Owen Bridges, Mehria Khan, Kendra Reed, and Gage Sattler. The activities performed were aroma testing, food sanitation and safety scenarios, brand vs. off-brand identification, and a team product development activity. The team placed seventh overall.

A Good Time to Heat Up the Season

What better time to give away a free furnace than winter?
Atteberry and Marshall Heating of Allenville is taking that a step further. They are giving away a free furnace, complete with installation, and the winner is announced Christmas Day.
“We have grown over the past two years and would like to give something back to the community,” office manager Sara Bendler said of the idea to give a furnace to someone in need.
“In October we were able to raise $1125 for breast cancer awareness,” Bendler said, noting they were talking about ways to give back to the community for the holidays when the furnace giveaway idea came up.
“Our technician Mark Stabler gets to see furnaces in different conditions every day, and he thought this would be a good way to help out,” Bendler continued, noting they partnered with Amana on the $3500 furnace and installation giveaway. Read More

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has recognized Illinois High School students scholastic achievements for 2016-17. Okaw Valley High School had five students named Illinois State Scholars based on outstanding academic achievement. Those students are Gretchen Macklin, Nicole Miller, Charli Uhlrich, Nick Tipsword and Alex Martin.

Windsor High School will host homecoming December 12 at the high school. Coronation will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the dance will take place from 8-11 p.m. The theme is Adventures in Wonderland.
