Analog phase-out makes way for more HDTV
Mediacom Communications announced recently it is upgrading network technology to provide area customers with a major expansion of its high-definition (HD) lineup, while also eliminating analog reception for Family Cable video channels.
Mediacom’s upgrade will affect the Family Cable channel series local subscribers find on their lineup between 23 and 78. Those channels will transition to a digital-only frequency in July and continued reception will require the use of either a digital converter or a digital adapter. Current customers may receive up to three digital adapters at no cost through July 31, 2015. Read More
Will help victims find resources often needed but unable to find

Moultrie County State’s Attorney Jeremy Richey announced at Thursday’s county board meeting that his office has been named the recipient of a Violent Crime Victims Assistance (VCVA) grant in the amount of $11,000.
“About six months or so ago I applied for this grant. The purpose of this is to get a victim witness coordinator, someone who will be a contact person when you have a victim of a violent crime or even a property crime. They can contact our office to know what the status of the case is, they’ll send letters out to the victims to keep them informed on the case,” said Richey. “[It can] provide them with resources, [like] victim compensation or referrals to different counselor organizations–all the sort of things victims may need but may not necessarily know how to get.” Read More

It could have been contentious, but in an anti-climactic, routine village board meeting last week Lovington trustees voted five to one against allowing the sale of package alcohol on Sundays within the village.
The topic originally came up for discussion at the May meeting but several trustees were uncomfortable putting it to a final vote because it was thought the matter had to be posted for public consideration. And given the extra time, the public did in fact weigh in on the matter. Read More

Lighting the Luminaria
Hannah Schlieker lights luminaria before the ceremony at Friday evening’s Moultrie County Relay for Life at Sullivan High School. According to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Specialist Alicia Pettyjohn, 25 teams participated in this year’s Relay, raising $62,000, and the opening lap saw 30 survivors walk. This year to see entertainment tent
The Village of Bethany will hold its annual town festival, The Bethany Celebration in Crowder Park June 20-21.
The theme is “Made in the USA” and will feature many of the same fun activities that the Celebration is known for, as well as some new additions. Read More
H.S. roof completion set back to November

A tour of the Arthur-Lovington High School building was conducted before the regular school board meeting last Wednesday as a number of classrooms were open for viewing leading to some discussion regarding future repairs and renovations.
Emerging from the tour and talks was that it is hoped that the high school band room has new carpet installed during winter break and some of its trophies donated to the alumni association to create additional storage space. Read More

A woman in Sullivan was charged Tuesday with aggravated battery after she allegedly attacked a UPS driver and was reported to have been acting strangely Friday afternoon.
According to Sullivan police chief John Love, a phone call was received shortly before noon Friday of a female walking in the North Graham Street area acting strangely and wearing aluminum foil on top of her head. An officer was then dispatched while more calls came in with similar reports, including that the woman had struck UPS driver Jeff Howard, of Windsor, with a cell phone, resulting in a two inch gash between his eyes that later required stitches. Sullivan man publishes first children’s book

Perhaps for most authors, books begin with writing something down.
For John Golden, his began with a text message. Or a series of them.
Now, two years later, the Sullivan man and monthly columnist for the News•Progress conducted his first book signing and children’s reading of “Kiley and the Love Struck Frog.”
“It’s about a frog that falls in love with a girl while she’s fishing. She gets up and leaves, and the frog waits for her, but she never comes back,” explained Golden. “He then decided he will go find her. That’s what the book is about, this journey to find Kiley and along the way he encounters different animals.” Read More
