Little Theatre Brings its 57th Season of Shows to Sullivan

Doors open June 4 with first production

Sullivan’s square gained more than 50 new faces this week as The Little Theatre brought in its cast and crew for their 57th summer season of shows. A total of 112 actors, designers, directors, technicians, and staff members from all over the United States will come to town during the 10 weeks of shows.
“To have so many great actors and technicians back again this year who have made The Little Theatre their second home makes putting these shows together so much fun,” said executive director and producer John Stephens. Read More
Children at Play, Drivers Beware

Parents cite speeding cars in residential areas

It’s that time of year when the weather is warmer, and children are spending time outside playing or walking or riding their bike home from school. As a result, it is important for drivers to be extra aware of children in school-zone and residential areas, but according to some parents, there are some who aren’t taking the extra precaution.
“There are drivers who are driving too fast. People are just zooming around the curves, and they aren’t stopping at stop signs,” noted Heather Casteel, a parent in Sullivan.
Casteel lives just past the golf course and has noticed an increased number of speeding drivers in her area.
“There’s a speed limit sign near the golf course. It is supposed to be 30 miles per hour, and people are driving at least 50,” she explained. “I have to warn the kids to stay away from the roads when they are outside. But if they are playing basketball and the ball goes out in the road, then they have to go out there and get it. Drivers need to be aware that kids might go out in the road.” Read More
OV, AL Schools Weigh-In on Sales Tax Measure
Each to vote on own resolution this month

Sullivan Schools may have passed a resolution Monday evening to place a school facility sales tax on the November ballot, but they aren’t the only district to serve the county desiring the extra revenue.
Both Okaw Valley and Arthur-Lovington school districts are expected to pass their own resolutions this month, with OV meeting on the 22nd and AL meeting on the 14th, though even without them, the referendum would still go before Moultrie County voters in November. Read More

Lovington Liquor Change Tabled Till June
Board wishes to get public input before a vote

Last week, the Lovington Village Board discussed amending the Sunday Liquor Ordinance to allow class B alcohol sales on Sundays. This would mean that businesses such as Casey’s would be able to sell packaged liquor from noon Sunday until 1 a.m. Monday, allowing extra revenue. Read More
School Sales Tax Comes to Moultrie
Additional 1% sales tax to be voted on in November election

Voters in Moultrie County will face whether to adopt a one percent additional sales tax come November.
The Sullivan school board formally adopted a resolution at their Monday night meeting to place the question of imposing a retailers occupation tax and a service occupation tax to be used exclusively for school facility purposes on the November ballot. The resolution passed 5-1 with board member Roger Bragg voting no. Read More

Greuel Receives Thesis Award
Sheila Greuel, Master of Arts in Gerontology at Eastern Illinois University, was the recipient of the 2014 Thesis Award of Excellence for the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences. One thesis from each of the four academic colleges is chosen as the outstanding thesis for that college. Greuel’s thesis was entitled The Impact of an Immersion in Long Term Care Course on Gerontology Graduate Students. Recipients of the College Thesis Awards were recognized during Graduate Exposition week in April, sponsored by the Graduate Student Advisory Council, The Council on Graduate Studies and The Graduate School. Greuel is originally from Sullivan.
