Crowning Touch

News Progress Posted on August 14, 2019 by webmasterAugust 14, 2019

Photo by Mike Brothers. Crowning Touch Sitting atop the main scoreboard at the Wyman Park baseball diamond is a giant Sullivan Redskin logo thanks to city electric dept. personnel and equipment working along with park dept. employees. Herb Bricker explained further signage will complete the ball diamond project. John Boy Carroll at Carroll’s Welding and Fabrication of Sullivan designed the Sullivan Redskin logo which is powder coated for a durable finish. Over the summer the pitcher’s mound and infield were upgraded and the outfield returfed. Park Dept. employees prepared the scoreboard’s Redskin crown for the electric dept. to place with bucket trucks. Pictured kneeling from left: Kyler Lane and Brandon Veatch; standing David Nolen, Clint Thompson, Ed Moody and Director of Parks and Cemeteries Herb Bricker. In the background an electric dept. bucket truck operator places sponsorship grid.

How Cool is That?
The Sullivan Fire District provided a water soaked end to the eight week Sullivan Summer Parks and Recreation program July 26. Firefighting volunteers gave the 155 kids some good water related fun at Wyman Park last Friday, then shed their fire helmets and coats for tongs and aprons, cooking for and serving the whole gang. The cooperative program between Sullivan Park District and the Civic Center is directed by Jake and Melissa Haegen.

Golden Rocket Launch
Elizabeth Titus Library in Sullivan commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon by hosting a rocket launch. Although hindered by the rain, summer park and recreation program kids enjoyed launching several water bottle rockets which flew over the ball diamond fence at Wyman Park. One engine powered rocket was launched and never found. It presumably landed on the dark side of the moon.

Harrison Street Rebuild

Harrison Street Rebuild
The building at the corner of Harrison and Van Buren streets in Sullivan had bricks falling from the outside wall resulting in the city blocking Van Buren as a safety precaution.
Zak Horn of Metro Communications responded to an appeal from Laurie Minor at Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development and bought the building from Pam Swinford. Horn explained that, thanks to contractor Jim Standerfer, wall demolition is underway and repairs will begin in July once the entire west wall is removed. A new roof and partial new HVAC will be installed for the building.
It is anticipated that the Moultrie County Counseling Center will occupy the east end, Sullivan Physical Therapy will remain in the center space and Kiki’s Boutique will return to the south end of the west side of the building once completed. The north space on the west side of the building will be available for rent by fall.
