Kayak for Laughs
Enough rain fell in Sullivan to turn normal streets into rivers for navigation. Above Rob and Whitney Martz take a kayak and tube cruise on their street in Bethany. According to the Illinois State Climatoligist Office 3.47 inches fell in Sullivan over the weekend with Sunday alone getting 2.77 inches. Lovington got a 2.46 inch weekend total and 2.06 one day maximum. Arthur received 2.06 inches for the weekend with a 1.11 inch single day maximum. Weekend totals are from 8 a.m. Friday, June 14 through 8 a.m. Monday, June 17.

Sullivan Boy Scout Troop 39 members were performing their annual cooking chores on the Sullivan IGA parking lot to commemorate Sullivan Townwide Rummages held June 7 and 8. IGA and First Community Bank joined the News Progress sponsoring the annual event. Above Scout Max Harner watches over brats at the beginning of lunch Friday, June 7.

Art In Tabor Park is an ongoing outreach program of the Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development Spark initiative.
It was held in conjunction with Music in the Park June 7 which began at 6:30 next door in Wyman Park
Molly (Reeder) Foust was the featured artist this month creating a pottery piece with her pottery wheel before the audience who also enjoyed background music from the community band.

Courageous Kids at SES

Courageous Kids at SES
Asher Hendry of Sullivan makes his way across the slackline that was set up at Sullivan Elementary School May 28. More than 400 elementary school students participated in the opportunity to try walking across a slackline. The slackline was set up by Courageous Kids Climbing, who traveled from Idaho to conduct the event. Courageous Kids Climbing provides free opportunities for
children between the ages of three months and 103-years with special needs, physical or developmental, to experience the various forms of rock climbing at events held throughout the western United States. They also conduct slacklining events at elementary schools during their travels. The event was coordinated by Sullivan Elementary School fourth grade teacher Nichole Hendry, who also provided accommodations for the representative from Courageous Kids Climbing.

The fifth annual St. Jude’s Dash & Bash was held at the Sullivan American Legion last weekend. Above kids enjoyed demo derby action in the afternoon with loads of events and entertainment enjoyed by St. Jude supporters from May 31 to June 1.

Memorial Day Services 2019

Memorial Day Services
Memorial Day services remembering those who died for the United States were held at Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan at 8:00 a.m. Monday. Sullivan American Legion Post 68 honor guard (left) gathered for the traditional 21 gun salute while Boy Scout Troop #39 marches in. The Honor Guard led the Memorial Day march from the Sullivan square to Greenhill Cemetery for a formal service. The Honor Guard also conducted Memorial services at the Vetrerans Memorial at Wyman Park and at Moultrie County Memorial Park.

Sullivan Electronics Recycling event much needed by community

Sullivan’s Saturday, June 7th, electronics recycling event, which began 30 minutes earlier than advertised at Wyman Park, drew crowds, ready to appropriately offload broken and outdated electronics. The top item discarded? Flat screen TVs and monitors (200+). The oddest items? A vintage electronic keyboard and a truckload of Christmas lights. Five trailers were filled to capacity and weighing in by tonnage. Those working the event were (L-R): Mike Cain, Brandon Beckwith, Kyler Lane, Clint Thompson, Mike Piper, Alex Bailey, Travis Hugues, and Luke Goss. Also in attendance was the Sullivan Police Department, ensuring residency requirements were enforced.
