Art Sparked in the Parks

Art In Tabor Park is an ongoing outreach program of the Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development Spark initiative.
It was held in conjunction with Music in the Park June 7 which began at 6:30 next door in Wyman Park
Molly (Reeder) Foust was the featured artist this month creating a pottery piece with her pottery wheel before the audience who also enjoyed background music from the community band.

The Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library summer reading kickoff was Friday, May 31. Librarian Laura Davison said some 200 children and adults enjoyed the morning filled with activities, treats and a wonderful introduction to summer reading in Sullivan.

Asher Hendry of Sullivan makes his way across the slackline that was set up at Sullivan Elementary School May 28. More than 400 elementary school students participated in the opportunity to try walking across a slackline. The slackline was set up by Courageous Kids Climbing, who traveled from Idaho to conduct the event. Courageous Kids Climbing provides free opportunities for
children between the ages of three months and 103-years with special needs, physical or developmental, to experience the various forms of rock climbing at events held throughout the western United States. They also conduct slacklining events at elementary schools during their travels. The event was coordinated by Sullivan Elementary School fourth grade teacher Nichole Hendry, who also provided accommodations for the representative from Courageous Kids Climbing.

St. Jude Dash & Bash
The fifth annual St. Jude’s Dash & Bash was held at the Sullivan American Legion last weekend. Above kids enjoyed demo derby action in the afternoon with loads of events and entertainment enjoyed by St. Jude supporters from May 31 to June 1.

Memorial Day Services 2019

Memorial Day Services
Memorial Day services remembering those who died for the United States were held at Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan at 8:00 a.m. Monday. Sullivan American Legion Post 68 honor guard (left) gathered for the traditional 21 gun salute while Boy Scout Troop #39 marches in. The Honor Guard led the Memorial Day march from the Sullivan square to Greenhill Cemetery for a formal service. The Honor Guard also conducted Memorial services at the Vetrerans Memorial at Wyman Park and at Moultrie County Memorial Park.

Best of OVHS Class

Kailynn Bobbett and Bella Benning were recognized on Saturday at the Best of the Class Event. WCIA 3 has recognized area high school seniors through this unique community project since 1983. This long running program honors students who have achieved academic excellence by featuring them in a series of television announcements. Bobbett and Benning are co-valedictorians at Okaw Valley High School.

Cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors and more gathered on a sunny Saturday in Lovington to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sparrows Unlimited, Inc. Saturday was filled with sunshine and kids playing on the inflatable playground. By Sunday afternoon storms and wind blew through the village, taking hundred year old trees down and limiting access to Route 133. A combined volunteer effort led to a four hour storm clean up May 19.

Big D’s Dogs is serving all beef hot dogs and Johnsonville brats across from CVS Pharmacy in Sullivan on Fridays. The food cart will be at the intersection of Hamilton and Jackson streets every Friday when weather permits. Owners Dennis and Judy Ozier are introducing three new items in addition to the Moultrie Monster and Cluckburger. New this season is the Sullivan Burger, Kitchen Sink Nachos and The Elvis “Dog”. Big D’s Dogs is also available for birthdays, anniversaries, reunions and more.

Windsor Schools March Students
Windsor Jr/Sr High School’s March Students of the Month are Joseph Broz, son of Joseph Broz and Brooke Lister, and Bridget Phillippi, daughter of Wiliam and Betty Phillippi and Tammy Car.
Broz is involved in basketball and Scholastic Bowl. He is interested in engineering as a career after high school.

The Kirby Foods meat department delivered hams to the Moultrie County Food Pantry on Wednesday the 16th, thanks to a generous anonymous donation. The hams will provide a nice Easter dinner.
