During the Steam Threshing and Baling show held at the Illinois Amish Heritage Center August 3 and 4 people from all over the area gathered at the Center east of Arthur to watch field demonstrations from early farming. Above the horse powered corn shucking machine cut a single row of stalks which were stacked on wagons for further preparation. Demonstrations of past farming operations included silage chopping, oat combining, disking, plowing, sickle mowing and hay loading by horses and tractors.

The Sullivan Parks and Recreation week of fun came to a close on Friday with Sullivan Fire District providing a cool closing followed by serving lunch to everyone participating in the weeklong program. Above fire department volunteer Dave Reed, Fire Chief Mike Piper and volunteer Rob Young serve Park and Recreation summer program participants.

DC Extravaganza
The Eighth Annual All Wheel Extravaganza was held in Dalton City with 105 vehicles on display. Bob Montague of Sullivan brought his 347ci powered1962 Ford Ranchero with the crowd traveling to and from Harley’s Hide Out and the Shamrock during rainy spells. The Northenders endured weather and heat to play from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 22.

Volunteers for Operation Secret Santa were ready to roll in the annual Jeepin’ for Jesse fund-raising event. Sign up was 11 a.m. July 14 at the Toy Bar in Sullivan. Operation Secret Santa kicked off at noon followed by silent and live actions with DJ tunes providing music at The Toy Bar to close the evening. Operation Secret Santa has grown to not only help those in need at Christmas but serves those in need around Moultrie County throughout the year.

Dance Station dancers from Sullivan performed on stage at Epcot and in a parade at Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Florida last week. Pictured are: Mileigh Brown, Judith Beery, Katie Smith, Olivia Wilkinson, Hannah Snow, Elizabeth Rutan, Ruby Schorey, Rose Wade, and Lindsey Ozier. The dancers rounded the circle in front of Cinderella’s castle during the parade with director Angie Neal walking alongside.

Mauck Promoted to Sergeant

John Mauck of Sullivan was recently promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. Sergeant Mauck has been stationed at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, since January 2016, where he is attached to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 18, First Marine Aircraft Wing. Sergeant Mauck enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2015 and is a 2013 graduate of Sullivan High School. He is the son of Dr. Greg and Kim Mauck and a grandson of Roger and Verna Tice and the late Sgt. James and Kathleen Mauck, all of Sullivan.

Sullivan’s Fourth of July celebration was blessed with summer heat and a sprinkling of rain June 30 through July 4. Conner Family Amusements of Beardstown introduced the 55 ft tall Ferris Wheel to Sullivan along with the Rock -O-Plane. Crowds enjoyed the carnival throughout the week with the American Legion Honor Guard leading the Fourth of July parade through town followed by activities at Wyman Park and the grand finale fireworks show from Central Illinois Fireworks Co. at dark. Findlay Fire Chief Ed Voltenburg was returning home from a mutual aid call to Shelbyville at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, July 7 when he noticed a burning garage west of the Findlay Marina. He called out Findlay firefighters just getting home from the earlier call, and they responded quickly and were able to get the garage owned by Nancy Beam cooled down until help arrived from the Sullivan, Windsor and Bethany fire departments.

Art for Children

Art for Children
An art camp for children going into first grade through sixth grade was held at the Sullivan Masonic Lodge June 24-28. There were 39 students from Sullivan, Bethany, Lovington, Arthur, and even two from Texas. Camp ran Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with young artists painting pottery, making collages, doing T-shirt designs, painting and hiding rocks, as well as creating a canvas painting. Eight high school and middle school volunteers helped make the camp possible. Molly Reeder-Foust, a local artist and high school art teacher in Decatur, conducted the class.

Sullivan Electronics Recycling event much needed by community

Sullivan’s Saturday, June 7th, electronics recycling event, which began 30 minutes earlier than advertised at Wyman Park, drew crowds, ready to appropriately offload broken and outdated electronics. The top item discarded? Flat screen TVs and monitors (200+). The oddest items? A vintage electronic keyboard and a truckload of Christmas lights. Five trailers were filled to capacity and weighing in by tonnage. Those working the event were (L-R): Mike Cain, Brandon Beckwith, Kyler Lane, Clint Thompson, Mike Piper, Alex Bailey, Travis Hugues, and Luke Goss. Also in attendance was the Sullivan Police Department, ensuring residency requirements were enforced.
