Archie Has Got a New Vest

Photo by RR Best Archie Has Got a New Vest Sullivan patrolman Adam Collins and Moultrie County sheriff’s deputy Kaleb Smith, K-9 patrol Archie’s handler, is pictured with Archie in his new bullet and puncture proof vest. Sullivan police dept.’s annual Rushmore law enforcement golf outing generated the extra funds from the 50/50 raffle and hole sponsors to help purchase the new vest. Golf outing coordinator Collins received approval from the sheriff’s K-9 unit for the donation with which police were able to purchase the $1800 vest for $1100.

One Book One Sullivan

Photo by Mike Brothers One Book One Sullivan Coordinator Rikki Ray announced this year’s One Book One Sullivan Middle School group is the largest ever with 26 members. This year’s selection of The Paper Cowboy by Kristine Levine was announced to a packed Sullivan Middle School gymnasium November 23. Principal financial supporters of the community project is the Sullivan Rotary Club, and members were in attendance. The OBO group produced a trailer for the introduction to the audience along with individual members giving insight into how the selection was made. The Paper Cowboy is a historical fiction set in the 1950s when communism was feared. Advisers and members of the One Book One Sullivan club are pictured above following the announcement to the school. Community discussions of the book will be announced in the future.

In all, 150 baskets were assembled and delivered in and around Lovington. Sparrows’ 22nd annual fundraising auction will be held December 3 at Jerry’s East End in Lovington.

Windsor FFA Honors Veterans

Photo furnished Windsor FFA Honors Veterans The Windsor FFA Chapter showed its support for  veterans Nov. 10. Eight FFA members folded four flags while a ninth member read the symbolism behind each fold. The flag folding ceremony took place during the Veterans Day assembly at Windsor High School.  Advisor Emily Perry also played taps at the end of the assembly. The members participating in the ceremony were front row (left to right) Gillian Sanders, Beau Bennett, Gavin Bennett, Ben Beck, Morgan Lesko. Back row (left to right) Gage Sattler, Travis Fox, Tristan Boehm, and Mackenzee Hooten.

VFW Auxiliary Donates to Peace Meal

Photo by Eric Kenney VFW Auxiliary Donates to Peace Meal  The Sullivan VFW Post 6410 Women’s Auxiliary presented a check for $1000.00 to the director of Peace Meal/Seniors Nutrition Program Left to right: Barbara Wylie - Sarah Bush Lincoln Peace Meal Director, Reva Martin, Sullivan Site Supervisor, Valerie Turnbow, Auxiliary Treasurer and Terrie Punches, VFW Post # 6410, Women’s Auxiliary President. Peace Meal is funded only partially with state and federal funds, and nearly 60% of the funds must come from local donations. The Community Services Grant will help fund Meals on Wheels for one year. In addition the Auxiliary serves a Friday night meal at the Post for seniors at special reduced rates.

Church Family Honored

Siegman Church Family Honored Virginia Weakly, 96, and Asher Graven Livingston, three months old, were the oldest and youngest members of the First Christian Church of Bethany attending the annual fall wiener roast. Weakly was a kindergarten teacher for many years and has been a member of the church for 73 years. Although not related by blood, they are bound in relationship by the fellowship of the church. Weakly has gone to church with four generations of Asher’s family.

Storm leaves damage in its wake

The storm that occurred in the evening hours of June 11th produced wind gusts of up to 70 mph left many locals without power, with many experiencing damage to property ranging from mild to extreme.
