Adult Prom a royal success
Jake and Jerica Thrasher were named the King and Queen of the 2024 Sullivan Adult Prom held this past Saturday at the Sullivan American Legion. The Down Syndrome Awareness fundraiser, hosted by Ten-Seventy Entertainment and Josh Dinger with Northwestern Mutual, raised funds for the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network. The event this year raised $2,100. The DSDN supports families with children diagnosed with Down Syndrome from birth thru all phases of life, including hospital stays, IEPS and more.

Shed Fire

Shed Fire
A small brush fire was suspected of catching the wooden shingles of a nearby storage shed on fire at the former Masonic Home last Friday. When the Sullivan Fire Department arrived on scene, the deck gun knocked down most of the roof, saving the structure from being a total loss. Bethany was called in for mutual aid. The Kirby Foods meat department delivered hams to the Moultrie County Food Pantry on Monday thanks to generous anonymous donation. The hams will provide for a nice Easter dinner. Pictured are meat department members Blake Eller and Cameron Eccles.

Genealogy Circle Meets

Genealogy Circle Meets
The first Genealogy Circle was held on March 12 at the history center in Sullivan. Gail Price, Genealogist, held the class with 16 attending and having different levels of experience with Family History research. This class was about how to start with research and document your findings.  The next class will be April 9 from 6:30-8 p.m. For future classes, special speakers are scheduled for various topics of information that can be obtained.   
Going forward this program will be held the second Tuesday of the month. If you would like to participate in the class and learn about your family history, have any questions or to register for the program, contact the History Center at 217-728-4085 or follow the Facebook page for details.

David Bell of Fairfield came to the Moultrie County History Museum on Wednesday, February 21 to restring a loom that the Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society had donated to them. The loom will be incorporated into a future exhibit at the museum.

The VFW Post 6410 recently sponsored the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests. All three local winners of the Patriot’s Pen contest were from Okaw Valley. They were first place-Benjamin Engler, second place-Jonnie Hart and third place-Magdalene Patient. Engler went on to win second place at the District 11 judging. They are pictured with Jennifer Hobbs.

The Sullivan Area Ministerial Association (SAMA) held an open house event at Sweet Vail on Wednesday, February 7. The event gave members of the community the opportunity to talk to local pastors and learn about the activities and initiatives that their churches are involved in.

Dawkins NEHS submission wows 



News Progress


Mae Dawkins, a Sullivan High School senior and member of the National English Honor Society, was recently informed that she is a national winner of the NEHS Intellectual Freedom Challenge, a prestigious competition that encourages NEHS members to craft compelling arguments defending texts that have faced challenges and bans. Her essay scored among some of the best submissions in the nation by university professors. May was awarded a certificate and a $150 dollar prize.
