Sullivan School District Spelling Bee
The Sullivan School District Spelling Bee was held on Wednesday, January 17 in the Sullivan High School Commons. Students from third through eighth grade participated in the bee. In previous years several students were chosen as finalists and moved to the next round. This year there was only one finalist. Raylan Roe, fifth grade, will go on to the next step which is a 50 question test that will be taken online in February.

to VA Home
Paul Snyder (left) and Sam Scott (right) recently delivered clothing to the VA home in Danville. They donated winter coats, jeans and undergarments with a total value of $1,000. The donation was provided by the Bethany American Legion Post 507 and their Veterans Service Organization (VSO). The Bethany Auxiliary Post 507 had recently donated $500 to the Danville Christmas gift shop and the Yanks Who Gave.

IGA Delivers Hams to Moultrie County Food Pantry
The IGA meat department delivered 115 hams to the C.E.F.S. Moultrie County Food Pantry on Monday, December 18. The hams were donated anonymously. The hams are given to local individuals who also receive a gift card to help them pay for the rest of their Christmas dinner.

SHS Spanish Club Service Day
At left, the Sullivan High School Spanish Club had a service day on Friday, December 8. Students visited various places including a funeral home, the post office, the fire department, Sullivan Elementary and Courtyard Estates. At Courtyard Estates students played a variety of games with residents including a cheering competition, dancing competition and guessing the names of various songs. Students awarded prizes to residents. The Spanish Club also baked cookies and delivered them.

Santa Bingo Held at Sullivan American Legion
Santa Bingo was held on Saturday, December 2 at the Sullivan American Legion. Children of all ages and those young at heart enjoyed breakfast and bingo and also had the opportunity to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Pictured are Sophie Foster, River Helmuth, Indie Harminson and Daniel Cisney with Santa and Mrs. Claus. All proceeds from the event benefit Down Syndrome Awareness.

Olaf and the Grinch embraced during the Lovington Christmas in the Park event on Saturday, November 25 at Tom Conn Park. Santa rode to the park on a firetruck.

Visiting Santa
Aliyah Whitlow visited Tom Conn Park in Lovington to tell Santa what she wants for Christmas. Christmas in the Park gave children the opportunity to visit with Santa, Olaf and the Grinch. The Christmas light displays were also turned on for the season that afternoon.

The 2023 Sullivan Pageants were held on Sunday, November 12 at Sullivan Elementary School. This year’s royalty is Little Miss Brystol Wiltermood, Young Miss Brooklyn Bates, Miss Sarina Voegel, Junior Miss Miah Voegel and Little Mister Leland Rich.

Dawkins NEHS submission wows 



News Progress


Mae Dawkins, a Sullivan High School senior and member of the National English Honor Society, was recently informed that she is a national winner of the NEHS Intellectual Freedom Challenge, a prestigious competition that encourages NEHS members to craft compelling arguments defending texts that have faced challenges and bans. Her essay scored among some of the best submissions in the nation by university professors. May was awarded a certificate and a $150 dollar prize.
