Eagle Creek Visited

Photo furnished Eagle Creek Visited State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti visited Shelbyville Oct. 9 to meet with several community and school leaders from Shelby and Moultrie counties to discuss tourism, including a short discussion on the Eagle Creek Resort, school reform, and mandate relief. The Lt. Governor was in the area at the invitation of Sen. Rose. Prior to the meeting in Shelbyville, she met with Rose and senior officials with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for a tour of the Eagle Creek site. Lt. Gov. Sanguinetti (center left) and Sen. Rose (right) met Oct. 9 with several community and school leaders from Shelby and Moultrie counties at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center to discuss state issues.

Apartment Fire

Photo by RR Best Apartment Fire Sullivan firefighters responded to a fire at the Graham Street apartments where flames had broken through a second story balcony. Fire investigator Kenny Graven said an estimated $10,000 fire damage was limited to the upstairs apartment with the cause undetermined. Searching for hot spots are: on roof from left Brock Read, Travis Hughes and Josiah Davidson; on ladder Adam Collins and on ground Kenny Graven, Kaleb Randall, Jason Fleming and Tyler Wright.

Blue Dolphins Bring Home Honors

Photo submitted by Jason Smith Blue Dolphins Bring Home Honors Pictured left to right: Mason Booker, Tucker Kull, Sofia Nuzzo and Kaiden Smith.  The Sullivan Blue Dolphins kicked off the short course season October 17 at the Olympia swim meet in Stanford.  They had 13 swimmers out of 30 place in the top six and brought home trophies and medals. In the eight & under division for the boys Tucker Kull placed fourth, Kaiden Smith fifth and Mason Booker sixth. Sofia Nuzzo took second place for the girl’s in the 9-10 age group. In the open division 13 and over Brynna Sentel and McKenna Kull tied for second, Anna Wooters took third, Natalie Drury placed fifth and Allison Oligschlaeger sixth. For the boys open division Tyler Homann placed first, Charlie Goss second and Brodie Goss third place. Gabrielle Spain placed fourth in the 11-12 division.  The 13-14 age group relay team of Natalie Drury, Anna Wooters, Allison Oligschlaeger and McKenna Kull broke two pool records.  First record to fall was the 200 freestyle relay held since 1991 with a time of 1:48.50, the 13-14 girls broke it with a time of 1:46.68. The second record broken was from 1997 for the 200 medley relay with a new time of 1:59.69; the old record was 2:01.38. Head coach Jason Drury said he couldn’t ask for a better start to the season.

Photo by RR Best Good Eatin’ Connor Denton enjoyed a mouthful of pancakes at the Sullivan Fire Department Pancake Breakfast held from 6 to 10 Saturday morning during Oktoberfest. The 5K Run/Walk followed breakfast which was followed by chili and wine tasting. Nightly entertainment rounded out the 12th annual Chamber sponsored event.

Rockome Foods is Still Open

Rockome Foods is Still Open In the October 14 edition of the News Progress the Rockome Gardens Closed article is misleading. Only the part of Rockome which is being converted to the Wildlife Park is closed. Rockome Gardens Foods which is located on the same site will remain open. Rockome Gardens Foods is open year round Monday-Saturday 9-5.

Windsor Students of September 2015

Windsor Students of September  Windsor High School has named junior Charles Farmer, son of Sara Palmore,  September Student of the Month. He is in FFA and cheerleading and hopes to become a welder or pipefitter after he graduates. Seventh grader Adilyn McCray is the September Student of the Month at Windsor Junior High.  She is the daughter of Chad and Faith McCray and participates in band, tumbling, soccer, and volleyball. Pictured at right are Charles Farmer and Adilyn McCray.

SOV Homecoming Parade 2015

Spectators were treated to candy thrown from the participants which included (from right counter clockwise) SOV football player, homecoming court candidates, members of the Sullivan High School class of 1975 celebrating 40 years, and Sullivan teachers dressed for success.

Early Morning Crash

Photo by RR Best Early Morning Crash At about 1 a.m. Sunday morning the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Dept. was called to a rear end crash at the bridge construction site over Lake Shelbyville on Route 32, south of Sullivan. The Jeep pictured was driven by Sara Szachnitowski, who was charged with driving under the influence. A passenger in her vehicle was transported to a local hospital by Sullivan Ambulance Service.

Storm leaves damage in its wake

The storm that occurred in the evening hours of June 11th produced wind gusts of up to 70 mph left many locals without power, with many experiencing damage to property ranging from mild to extreme.
