Governor Bruce Rauner visited the Moultrie County Republican Central Committee candidate’s gathering at NorthEnd Pub and Grill at Sullivan Marina Monday, August 13.
Gov. Rauner pointed out that Central Committee Chair Dave McCabe and the Moultrie County Republican party are a passionate organization dedicated to party values and giving back to the community.
Before a crowd of 75 the governor emphasized his campaign pledge to work for term limits and replace Michael Madigan as leader of the State House of Representatives.
Gov. Rauner illustrated his commitment to helping pick up the nine seats needed to gain control in the state house. He is donating $50 million of his own money to the party to help elect Republicans statewide such as Attorney General candidate Erika Harold.
Citing a growing state immigration problem, he endorsed E-Verify, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees, both U.S. or foreign citizens, to work in the United States.
The governor indicated his resistance to raising income taxes and emphasized his support for the second amendment.
He urged Moultrie County to get the vote out. “This election is for all the marbles,” he said, explaining he needed to spend the next 90 days in Chicago suburbs where he contends for six million votes.

•July 25, 2018•

The second annual Steam Threshing Show will be held August 3-4 at the new Illinois Amish Heritage Center three miles east of Arthur. Times will be 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The 2018 show will be centered around harvesting and threshing oats rather than wheat. The oats will be cut and bound into sheaves by a horse-drawn mechanical binder two weeks before the event after which the sheaves will be stacked into shocks for drying in the field. On the day of the event, they will be loaded onto horse-drawn wagons and transported to the threshing machine which will separate the grain from the chaff and straw. The grain will be directed to a bin, and the straw will form a hay stack that will continually grow with each new round of threshing.
The threshing process will be done using antique farming equipment including a 1924 steam tractor and threshing machine made by the Keck-Gonnerman Company of Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Other antique and vintage agricultural equipment will also be on display, including a 1954 Massey Harris model 44 tractor owned by Sam Miller, a 1931 John Deere D owned by George Kauffman, and many other antique tractors. Farm equipment demonstrations will feature a John Deere stationary hay baler, old engines and steam engines, a grist mill, field demonstrations of plowing and disking, with Belgian horses and the old methods of threshing grain by hand with flails and a fanning mill. Blacksmithing will also be demonstrated as well as goat milking and butter churning. All demonstrations will be “learn abouts” as they will be accompanied by explanations of the processes. Read More

The third time was a charm for Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development with the Moultrie County Board agreeing to reimburse $18,809.26 in expenses at the July 12 meeting.
In this third attempt to get reimbursed for money already budgeted by the county board Chamber executive director Laurrie Minor, Lake Shelbyville operations manager Jon Summers and Matt Condill of the Great Pumpkin Patch explained efforts by the Chamber to improve tourism in all of Moultrie County.
Summers began by explaining the partnership at the Chicago Camping and RV with the Chamber had benefitted the lake and the county by reaching 25,000 potential visitors during the four day event.
He explained the Corp has invested $3.2 million in recreation areas including updates at Sullivan beach and Wilborn Creek.
“The more we can partner with Sullivan Chamber and places like the Great Pumpkin Patch the greater our chances to improve tourism for the whole area,” Summers explained.
He indicated partnerships with Okaw Valley schools and the Fish Habitat Alliance are examples of ways the lake has successfully extended its involvement in the communities that surround it. Read More

‘Damn Yankees” is a Home Run at The Little Theatre!

Summertime and America’s thoughts turn fondly to baseball. And there is no finer baseball musical than the sizzling production of “Damn Yankees” currently at The Little Theatre on the Square in Sullivan. Based on the old Faustian legend of a man selling his soul to the Devil, “Damn Yankees” opened in 1955 and made overnight stars of choreographer Bob Fosse and his future wife Gwen Verdon. It swept all the major Tony awards in 1956 and ran for nearly 2,000 performances.
It was revived in 1994, and this production is based on that 1994 shorter version.
It’s Washington in the 1950s, and Joe Boyd (Dick Borders) is sick and tired of his beloved Washington Senators getting beaten by those “damn Yankees”. If only the Senators had a young, strong, long ball hitter, they could tromp those Yankees.
Presto! The Devil appears in the guise of Mr. Applegate (Drew Stark) and offers Joe the chance to become “Joe Hardy”, the young, 22-year-old slugger the Senators need. The catch is Joe must give up his beloved wife Meg (Ann Borders). Joe accepts but the real estate agent in him makes him insist on an escape clause.
The Senators’ last game is Sept. 25, and if he plays in it, he must remain Joe Hardy forever. If not, he has until 9 the night before to walk away and resume his former life. Read More

United Way Moultrie County Strengthens the Community

News Progress Posted on July 4, 2018 by webmasterJuly 3, 2018

•July 4, 2018•

For the first time in recent years United Way was able to fund requests for the eight Moultrie County agencies that applied.
United Way Director of Community Impact James Keith pointed out fund-raising efforts increased by 30% allowing all eight agency requests to be granted. Keith emphasized agencies involved such as Moultrie County Counseling Center, Moultrie Beacon and DOVE also work together to make the most effective use of those funds possible.
“One positive impact on the community is the Peace Meal program which uses great local partners to reach out,” Keith said of the kind of agency programs supported by United Way.
He emphasized that one reason United Way is effective is that all the money donated in Moultrie County is decided by a local five person board, assuring what is donated here stays here and used the best way possible.
“We have to give a great deal of credit to our friends at Agri-Fab and Hydro-Gear,” Stan Parks, director of Resource Development for United Way began.
“The employees participating in the United Way campaign have been extremely generous,” Parks said of fund-raising at the industries, as well as other businesses in Moultrie County.
“Even those who aren’t making much money donate because a lot of times they have a relative or know someone receiving help from one of the agencies United Way supports,” Parks continued. Read More

It was snorkeling day at Rainbow River for the 24 Sullivan school students taking the Science Trip to Florida.

The fifth annual Sullivan school science trip was taken to Tampa, Fla. June 11-14 with 24 students attending.
“It was a way for the kids to have four days of fun while accidentally learning something along the way,” said science teacher Troy Rogers who leads the every other year trip for interested middle school students.
He explained the trip is through World Strides and is not a school district function. Rogers and his wife Kari chaperoned along with Aaron Kirk and Kimberly Wallace who had attended the 2010 trip.
Geared for those interested in science and nature, student vacationers dissected squid at Clearwater Marine Aquarium and even got to swim with manatees.
Rogers noted that the group learned about the manatee family with the baby manatee impressing the kids with its playfulness.
“This is a short trip, early in the week so those involved in other summer activities could get back and not miss anything,” Rogers said, explaining that son Drew got back in time for basketball camp. Read More

Sullivan – Home to the Two-Piece Custom Made Pool Cue

Want a Durbin custom made pool cue? Get in line; there is a two year waiting list.

Few people know that about two miles north of Sullivan on Market Street in an unremarkable farm building Mike Durbin is crafting exquisite Durbin Custom Cues for professional pool players all over the U.S.
When a repair on his favorite pool cue didn’t meet Durbin’s exacting standards, he decided in 1995 that he could do better – and he has.
” We handcraft cues primarily for professional players,” Mike began. “Our cues start at $800, and the sky is the limit.”
The most expensive one he has made has emeralds and diamonds inlaid, and the customer provided all the exotic materials. It is valued at $12,000.
Because the cues are made only for professional players they are prized as collector’s items when a rare one comes up for sale.
From the selection of wood to the ebony and ivory on the shafts, Durbin has exacting standards that guide his craft.
He uses white maple wood grown near the snow line in Canada for the superior grain of the wood. Read More

Pastor Paul and Anne McGhghy celebrate their 44th anniversary in July.

After nearly 40 years in the Holy Ministry, Pastor Paul McGhghy will step down as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church at the end of this month.

To honor his years of service the church is planning a retirement celebration on June 24 which will be open to the public.

As a child, Pastor Paul watched the Rev. Billy Graham on TV and knew at the age of five that he wanted to be a minister. His 90-year-old mother Ruth recalled that he was an obedient child with a heart of gold and was always trying to please others.

“He had no allowance in those days so he collected beer bottles for two cents each, and that was his spending money,” Grandma Ruth began. “He shoveled walks and always did whatever was necessary.”

She is sad to miss the celebration but is grateful for the daily talks and Skype visits.

Younger sister Beth remembers him as a hard worker who was an assistant manager at Kmart by the time he was a senior in high school. They offered him a managerial position, but his focus was always on the ministry. Read More
