The fifth annual Sullivan school science trip was taken to Tampa, Fla. June 11-14 with 24 students attending.
“It was a way for the kids to have four days of fun while accidentally learning something along the way,” said science teacher Troy Rogers who leads the every other year trip for interested middle school students.
He explained the trip is through World Strides and is not a school district function. Rogers and his wife Kari chaperoned along with Aaron Kirk and Kimberly Wallace who had attended the 2010 trip.
Geared for those interested in science and nature, student vacationers dissected squid at Clearwater Marine Aquarium and even got to swim with manatees.
Rogers noted that the group learned about the manatee family with the baby manatee impressing the kids with its playfulness.
“This is a short trip, early in the week so those involved in other summer activities could get back and not miss anything,” Rogers said, explaining that son Drew got back in time for basketball camp. Read More

Want a Durbin custom made pool cue? Get in line; there is a two year waiting list.

Few people know that about two miles north of Sullivan on Market Street in an unremarkable farm building Mike Durbin is crafting exquisite Durbin Custom Cues for professional pool players all over the U.S.
When a repair on his favorite pool cue didn’t meet Durbin’s exacting standards, he decided in 1995 that he could do better – and he has.
” We handcraft cues primarily for professional players,” Mike began. “Our cues start at $800, and the sky is the limit.”
The most expensive one he has made has emeralds and diamonds inlaid, and the customer provided all the exotic materials. It is valued at $12,000.
Because the cues are made only for professional players they are prized as collector’s items when a rare one comes up for sale.
From the selection of wood to the ebony and ivory on the shafts, Durbin has exacting standards that guide his craft.
He uses white maple wood grown near the snow line in Canada for the superior grain of the wood. Read More

After nearly 40 years in the Holy Ministry, Pastor Paul McGhghy will step down as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church at the end of this month.

To honor his years of service the church is planning a retirement celebration on June 24 which will be open to the public.

As a child, Pastor Paul watched the Rev. Billy Graham on TV and knew at the age of five that he wanted to be a minister. His 90-year-old mother Ruth recalled that he was an obedient child with a heart of gold and was always trying to please others.

“He had no allowance in those days so he collected beer bottles for two cents each, and that was his spending money,” Grandma Ruth began. “He shoveled walks and always did whatever was necessary.”

She is sad to miss the celebration but is grateful for the daily talks and Skype visits.

Younger sister Beth remembers him as a hard worker who was an assistant manager at Kmart by the time he was a senior in high school. They offered him a managerial position, but his focus was always on the ministry. Read More

We watched them approach in the distance with flags unfurled taking measured steps as they marched down Water Street towards Greenhill Cemetery.

The American Legion Honor Guard and a Boy Scout troop entered the cemetery to the intermittent command of “hut, hut” and took their positions for the solemn memorial services.

After a prayer, Marine Corps Major Lynn Lowder addressed the crowd of some 100 people. A graduate of Sullivan High School and a frequent speaker there, he noted that both his parents and grandparents are buried in Greenhill.

Major Lowder recalled that his first military ceremony was here, and he knew it was important because of all the flags and the music. Read More

Three words expressed the feelings of 81 Sullivan High School seniors during commencement exercises held in the gymnasium at 2:30 p.m.  Sunday, May 20.

Class president Winchester Phelps reminded classmates that the dumbest ideas make the best memories and that with the help of school and family: “We did it!”

Salutatorian Trevor Elder said starting high school was like random pieces of a puzzle and that each year those pieces started to fit into a plan for the future. “You may fall down, you will make mistakes,” Elder said. “Pick yourself up and move forward.”

Valedictorian Laine Cameron contrasted the urgency for seniors wanting to finish their last year of high school with what it took to actually get it done. Read More

Bill Burger had wanted to showcase Tabor Park in Sullivan and thanks to Mason Point a concert at the park series began Friday, May 1.

For many years Sullivan residents have enjoyed the benefits of having two wonderful parks. The Tabor family donated the land for Tabor Park with the plan that benefits be free to all.

Sullivan City Council and the Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development, however, have been challenged to provide continuous programs for both parks. That’s where Bill Burger came in.

Burger lives near Tabor Park and runs there every day.

“Tabor Park is the best kept secret in Moultrie County,” he began. “It is a wonderful park. People walk their dogs there, and I have met many wonderful people there.”  Read More

Folks who attended the Douglas County CEO Trade Show April 25 got a chance to see what the future of business in this area could potentially hold.

ALAH senior students presented businesses which they developed themselves as part of a project in the CEO class that the high school began offering this school year.

Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) facilitator Stepheny McMahon of Sullivan explained the inaugural program includes high school students from Arthur, Arcola, Tuscola and Villa Grove.

“There are some incredible business leaders in Douglas County.” McMahon said of economic developers who committed to $1000 per year for three years to help finance the cooperative program introducing students to the business world.

“Touring these businesses for first hand experiences plus the soft skills learned can open doors for these young entrepreneurs,” she continued.

The 12 participating students meet from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Mondays at various business and manufacturing locations in Douglas County. Fundamental skills such as the proper hand shake and showing up on time to meetings are among the soft skills developed as the students work on their own businesses. Read More
