OV Expansion Adds Education Alternative

News Progress Posted on February 7, 2018 by webmasterFebruary 7, 2018

•February 7, 2018•

Okaw Valley High School’s success with U.S. Corp of Engineers cooperative at Lake Shelbyville has the school district looking at breaking new ground.

The Okaw Valley Community School district approved plans Jan. 18 to move forward with a new 5000 sq. ft. agricultural building and facility including 1500 ft of classroom, 2000 sq. ft. animal handling facility and 1500 ft. animal housing structure.

The idea for this university style interactive agriculture facility came with a challenge to expand the coop concept from Supt. Kent Stauder to agriculture teacher and Corp coop coordinator Wes Wise.

“We hope to continue to offer experiences to Okaw Valley students that are not found at any other district, and we will continue to pave the way for career and technical education for students as they enter the workforce,” Stauder said of his reason to push the ag teacher for a grand idea. In the summer of 1967 Lee Norton made the decision to close the Grand Theater for the summer in order to concentrate on his drive-in. He had heard that a young man (Guy Little, Jr.) was looking for a venue for summer musicals so Lee rented out the Grand.

This one decision ultimately paved the way for a considerable economic ripple in Sullivan as Jibby’s restaurant flourished, the Ace Hardware prospered, hairdressers and manicurists tended to the movie stars, David Mobley found a career as the Little Theatre’s photographer and sometime chauffeur, and Little persuaded friends such as Art and Mamie Palmer to take in his actors as boarders. Those who prospered had extra funds to spend at other places in Sullivan thus creating a trickle-down economic flow throughout the community. Read More

In 2014, former Sullivan resident Megan (Buxton) Thompson was watching an NFL game with her husband in mid-October during breast cancer awareness month. Players and coaches wore pink and she kidded about checking to make sure she didn’t have a lump.

She had been recently experiencing pain in her left chest so she jokingly performed a self-exam and found a lump.

“Within two weeks, I was diagnosed with (Stage 3b) breast cancer,” she said. “We don’t have any family history of cancer, and I don’t have the BRCA gene. My chances of getting breast cancer at 27 years old with no family history or genetic mutations was less than two percent.”

She decided no matter what the diagnosis, with the help of family, friends and faith, she was going to fight.

She went through a mastectomy, six months of chemo, six and a half weeks of radiation, and started on hormonal therapy. Read More

Ron White

•January 17, 2018•

Moultrie County Board members voted to accept the resignation of longtime board member Ron White during the regular meeting January 11.

Chairman Dave McCabe noted it was with deep regret that he accepts the 15 year board member’s resignation. The budget and finance chairman had overseen the construction of the jail and health department, McCabe said of his years of service. “I will miss his sound and usually sage advice.”

He went on to explain the chairman of the Republican party will have 60 days to name a successor. The appointment Republican will serve until the November 2018 election when a candidate will be elected to serve the remainder of White’s term which ends in 2020. Read More

News Progress Posted on January 10, 2018 by webmasterJanuary 10, 2018

•January 10, 2018•

A plan to ease elementary school overcrowding while increasing course options was proposed by Sullivan Unit 300 Supt. Ted Walk to the school board Monday.

Moving the fifth grade from the elementary school to the middle school building in the 2018-2019 school year should provide a permanent solution to a problem that has existed for several years.

“Every classroom in the elementary school is being used,” Supt. Walk said. “There are times when occupational therapists and aides are working with students in storage closets.”

Built in 1996 Sullivan Elementary School exceeds its capacity with 548 students and 29 teachers. Read More

Brianna Mahon, the Princess of Carnage, as she is known in the Monster Jam Truck circle, is the first driver in Monster Jam history allowed to design her own truck.

Most people around Moultrie County recognize the Country Cutz salon owner in Dalton City for her ability to style hair, but there is much more to the Sullivan High School graduate.

On January 13, 2018 in Anaheim, Calif. she will introduce “Whiplash” – a 12’ tall, 10,000 lb. one-of-a-kind monster truck in her favorite color, turquoise, and painted to look like tooled leather.

“I’m known for my custom cowboy hats and boots so this was an opportunity to combine my love of rodeo and country/western into the design.” she said and added, “this is the first time a driver has ever had a hand in designing a truck, and I have been involved in every stage of the development.” They are trying to attract more women and young moms to the programs.
