Mark and Judi Seeley of Bethany gave the neighborhood a surprise just after the summer had officially started to dwindle, opening their very own homemade, handmade pizza’s. Mark Seeley, Sullivan native and Class of  ‘79 graduate, started his deep dive into cooking upon buying his first smoker.

“It all started with this, smoked pulled pork and some other things, and then I got this barrel and made my own smoker out of the barrel” Mark explained while touring his house-side kitchen with the oven and smokers. “The barrel smoker was hand made and the oven was too.”

by Sharon Barricklow

Sullivan residents will be paying four percent more for their electrical service after a rate hike was passed Thursday night by the Sullivan City Council.

Commissioner Mike Kirk said the across the board four percent increase was needed because Ameren Illinois, who sells the city power, had increased their rates.

“This is just their rate that is being passed through to us,” he said.

The rate increase does not affect municipal or state taxes on power bills.

Veterans Day Art and Writing Contest

The Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit #68 recently presented awards to several Sullivan students who participated in the Auxiliary’s 2024 Veterans Day Art and Writing Contest. Entries that recognized a veteran with Moultrie County ties also received special recognition.

Junior Jade McKee placed first in the 11th and 12th grade art division with her piece entitled “A Hero at Pearl Harbor.” Her drawing honors Doris “Dorie” Miller, the first black recipient of the Navy Cross. As a mess attendant third class in the United States Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Miller manned a .50 caliber Browning machine gun that he was not trained to use and shot down a Japanese plane. He did this to save an injured skipper. While making Miller the focus of her artwork, she depicted both his heroic action and the Japanese airplane he shot down over Pearl Harbor.

The bottom line is that the budget will again be balanced this year. Board member Zachary Horn took a keen interest in various aspects of the budget, engaging Superintendent Walk in many discussions to gain a deeper understanding. The other six members remained silent. Read More

Massive Makers Market welcomes back the fall season with homemade goods

News Progress Posted on September 4, 2024 by webmasterSeptember 4, 2024

The Markets at Building 1225 are well known for being some of the largest gatherings of individual venders in one area within Moultrie County. Holding many markets within a year the building provides space for the venders, food, entertainment and much more for any and all guests. The building constantly has open applications for  new and starting venders at each fair, allowing fresh businesses to get in on the market action. The Saturday, August 31st Makers Market was unlike the other providing the same great refreshments, with food trucks with drinks available, playground area for children and of course lines and lines of booths filled to the brim with venders creations. Other local festivals see these venders, but only a few at a festival, looking back at the Two Story Outhouse Festival in Gays where some venders had stated they only attend certain events. “Well being a small business and making your own shop items makes it hard for you to really go places, especially if there is a large booth fee. City Council changes meeting dates

News Progress Posted on August 21, 2024 by webmasterAugust 20, 2024

•August 21, 2024•

by Sharon Barricklow

Sullivan City Council meetings are moving from the first and third Thursdays to the second and fourth Thursday after a vote Thursday night by the council. Mayor Mike Mossman said changing the meeting dates will give city employees more time to complete actions including getting the city’s bills ready for payment by council vote. “It will just make everything go more smoothly,” he said.

The meeting date change came as part of a series of actions the council took after an audit revealed what Mossman called “significant deficiencies in internal controls.” The council has hired 2020 Forensic Accounting of Bethany to, according to Mossman, “look at our accounting practices.”  Read More

by E. Scott England

The Sullivan CUSD #300 school board met on Monday, August 12 for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting. All seven board members were present. Also present were the three principals. The meeting itself was fairly mundane, and, as is typical, few board members engaged in discussions on any of the business that was voted on.

Each principal gave a report on their respective buildings and happenings from over the summer. Sullivan elementary principal Leslie Guyot reported that they have had several new students register. She reported that some students have moved out, but there were far more move-in students this year. Read More
