Kathy was born August 7, 1940, in San Jose, California, the daughter of Hermann L. and Alice E. Horn. She graduated from Sunnyvale High School in 1958. She attended the University of Idaho, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and where she met her husband Steve Wood. They were married June 16, 1962 in Sunnyvale, California.
