Returning Starters Power Okaw Valley Volleyball Squad

In her second year as Okaw Valley volleyball head coach, Sarah McDowell is looking to build on last year’s successes with every starter but one returning to this year’s squad.
OV returned nine varsity players and six seniors to a club that had a 15-14 overall record and a 4-3 Little Okaw Valley Conference record.
Leading up to the team’s first match, OV has been able to spend less time on skill development and incorporate more drills that focus on running multiple hitting routes and tailoring the defense to fit the player’s strengths.
“I believe our greatest strength is our number of players with varsity experience,” said McDowell. “We only lost one senior (Natalie Jeffers) last year, which has given us the opportunity to build upon what we accomplished last season.”
The team has also been working to improve block coverage by incorporating drills that put the girls in game-like situations and teach them to balance the court at all times. Read More

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond football team could not hold off a long sustained third-quarter drive and score by Tri-County’s offense in Friday’s season opener at Oakland.
The Titans (Kansas/Shiloh/Oakland) scored in the first quarter and kicked an extra point to take a 7-0 lead.
The Knights answered in the second quarter when Billy Fifer scored a touchdown and Aaron Likens kicked in the extra point to tie the game 7-7.
“Coming out in the third quarter, it was a tie game,” said first-year coach Ryan Jefferson, “but they ate up half of the quarter by just running the ball and chipping away down the field.”
Titan Lane Bisby broke the tie in the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run to take a 14-7 lead. Read More

The Sullivan/Okaw Valley football team was looking for its first win in nearly two years during its season opener at Nokomis/Ramsey Friday night.
SOV finished 3-6 in 2016 and winless in 2017, but despite playing a tough first three quarters, the Redskins could not overcome a strong 15-0 third quarter run in a 22-7 nonconference loss at Nokomis.
“Overall we did some good things but far too many mistakes on both sides of the ball,” Myers said. “On a positive note, our kids played their tails off. Would have been easy to let up once we got down two scores in the fourth, and they just kept battling. Couldn’t be more proud of their effort.”
Nokomis scored first on a 20-yard pass to Wayden Brown, who ran a cross-and-up route for the touchdown in the second quarter.
SOV answered later in the second quarter when sophomore Ian Plank caught a pass from junior Luke Harlin for a touchdown.
Plank kicked the extra point to tie the game at seven. Read More

ALAH Volleyball Team Returns With Efficient Experience

News Progress Posted on August 29, 2018 by webmasterAugust 29, 2018

•August 29, 2018•

NP Sports

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond volleyball team returned five seniors to this year’s squad, but the Knights are a relatively short team.
“It will be hard for us to overpower some teams with our small size,” said ALAH coach Emily Crossman. “We will have to use our block to funnel the ball, as the first line of defense, rather than depending on the stuff block. Our hitters have to be smart and play with a purpose.”
But one thing that Crossman can count on is that she has a smart team.
“We have a strategy and know where to place the ball,” she said. “The girls work together tremendously well and support one another in everything.”
For the last few weeks, the team has been trying to perform every play with a purpose. Read More
