With 3:07 to go in the first half, Tyler Schuring finally sank the Knights’ first 3-point field goal of the game Wednesday on senior night against Shiloh. The bucket was a part of a 12-4 half-closing run for the Knights as they took a 30-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

“It was obvious early we weren’t making outside shots,” Knights head coach Dale Schuring said. “I told them to attack at the half and at times we did, but we didn’t do as well as we could have. We missed way too many layups.”  Read More

Jr. hits 32 points, including crucial 3-pointer against ALAH

It was the situation every little kid practices.

Down three, five seconds to go, with the ball, coming down the court in a big game. In this case it was the regional championship, and it was Emily Neuhauser who rose up and drained a triple as time expired in the first overtime, tying the game at 75 and continuing the Lady Redskins’ hopes of back-to-back titles.

It was arguably the best night in Neuhauser’s basketball career, scoring a team high 32 points—including her 1,000th career point after her first eight in the first quarter—and putting her team on her back, even while carrying four fouls in the second extra session. On the flip side, Sherelle Coller finished the game eight points shy of 1,000 for her career.

“I didn’t remember how much time there was,” Neuhauser said. “I was like ‘this is crucial, we need it’ and I stopped and popped, and I was hoping and praying it went in and it did. I’m just speechless about it now.”

“I told the girls to put that one on me I struggled on the bench down the stretch,” Lancers head coach Craig Moffett said in regard to not fouling before Neuhauser’s shot. “I have to get better.”

As expected, and felt by everyone in the arena, Neuhauser’s bomb swept the momentum back in Sullivan’s favor and with the game tied at 77, Neuhauser scored down low again over Lancer Brooke Tabb and converted two at the line on her next trip, and between then and the last 1.4 seconds of the game, the Lady Redskins defense picked up and held the Lancers scoreless clinching the 84-77 victory. Free throws down the stretch aid Windsor

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Free throws are the name of the game in basketball for a reason.

Saturday night, 12 of Windsor’s 22 first half points came from the free throw line, and all of those would prove vital for the Devils in their 68-63 2OT win, upsetting Okaw Valley’s senior night in the process.

“We preach getting to the free throw line, and I think we did a good job of not settling for an outside shot,” said Devils head coach Silas Pogue. “Mitch Haddock and Nick Hutchinson made some in the second half after we didn’t have very many in the first half, but it was a very good night.”

Windsor started the half on a 13-7 run, and Haddock’s lone 3-pointer of the game brought the Devils back to claim their lead 35-34, and the Devils held a 40-38 lead at the end of three. Read More

For those familiar with Tyra Buss and her performance against Sullivan in last year’s sectional semi-final, the Mt. Carmel phenom proved why as a senior she was even more lethal in this year’s sectional. The future Indiana University athlete led the nation this year in scoring by averaging 46.9 points per game and did three better Tuesday night, scoring 50 in just three quarters, propping her team up to a 78-43 victory.

“I think in our case it’s Tyra Buss,” said Sullivan head coach Sheri McCain. “I thought Elissa Stewart did the best she could guarding Tyra. She stole the ball from her twice, took her to the hole twice, it’s just hard to maintain that type of play the entire game.” Read More

Sullivan catcher to enjoy immediate role next fall

by Keith Stewart

Taylor Gottfriedt is a leader.

Her summer softball coaches will tell you that.

Her high school softball coach will tell you that.

Even her forthcoming college coach will tell you that, and she’s only watched her play.

And it’s this clear leadership value that Gottfriedt brought to the table in her decade of softball that now has her seated at Lincoln College on a partial scholarship beginning next fall.

“I’m excited to get Taylor over to Lincoln,” said head coach Crystal Wurth. “She is a very, very smart ball player. She knows the game and does a very good job of communicating with her teammates so she will follow with the leadership from high school and carry that on into college.” Read More

Redskins battle through OV Tourney, defeating host in Championship Saturday

by Keith Stewart

“Why not us.”

What had been a rhetorical question and even mantra became a simple statement Saturday night when Sullivan, the no. 5 seed, upended no. 7 seed and host Meridian in the Okaw Valley tournament championship.

After 12 long years, the trophy came back to Sullivan in what is the final year of the Okaw’s existence. Sullivan last won the conference tourney in 2002 when they defeated Monticello 51-43. But it was 14 years ago that a young Chester Reeder, then a junior on the basketball team, was a part of the ‘99 Sullivan group to win the trophy. Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

This past week of the Arthur-Lovington Knights basketball season was a pretty good one.

The team went 3-0, defeating Georgetown-La Sallete Monday—in which senior Curtis Plank scored his 1,000th point, and his junior brother Jeremy added 17, Tri-County Friday, and LSA on Saturday. But of the three wins, the one against the Titans was perhaps the most special. Read More
