Okaw Valley Sports Briefs

The Okaw Valley boys’ baseball team won another regional title this past week but could not parlay that momentum into a sectional win.
During the Class 1A IHSA Regional C, the Timberwolves knocked off Kansas 3-0 Friday, June 4, and then defeated Lincoln Prairie rival Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 4-0.
The Timberwolves advanced to Sectional 6 but lost to Farina South Central 7-2
Against Farina South Central, the Timberwolves fell behind 3-0 in the third inning.
Farina South Central scored another run in the fifth inning. Okaw Valley countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 4-2. Read More
Sullivan Blue Dolphins Now Able To Compete

Sullivan Blue Dolphins Swim Team under the guidance of USA Swimming and Illinois Swimming is now able to attend swim meets under strict COVID requirements. In May, forty-six Dolphins attended a dual competition with the Terre Haute Torpedoes. The weekend of June 5, fourteen swimmers were able to compete at the Capital City Classic meet in Springfield which hosted some of the top swimmers in the state.

The Sullivan boys’ track and field team competed in the IHSA Class 1A Track and Field Sectional #10 at Tuscola Friday, June 11.
The Redskins placed seventh out of 17 teams with 27 points.
Redskin Terence McRill won the long jump to qualify for the IHSA State Track Meet next Thursday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
McRill leaped a personal record distance of 6.13 for first place.
The 400-meter relay team of Colin Chappel, Cody Browne, Cooper Browne and McRill placed third with a time of 45.36.
Chappel also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash at 25.44 and fifth in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 11.65.

Sullivan Boys’ Track Wins Last Home Meet Of Season

The Sullivan boys’ track and field team won its last home meet of the season by defeating Shelbyville, Warrensburg-Latham and St. Teresa in Sullivan.
Sullivan scored a meet best 79.5, which was only three points better than second-place finisher Shelbyville. Warrensburg-Latham took third with 60 points and St. Teresa placed last with 47 points.
Sullivan had a three first place winners, including Davis Diepholz, Terence McRill, Jayden Troxell and a relay team.
Diepholz ran the 3,200 meters in 13:17.54, and Terence McRill long jumped 6.06 meters.
Troxell tossed the shot put a personal-best distance of 11.24 meters. Read More

The Okaw Valley baseball team shut out Argenta-Oreana 12-0 to pick up another Lincoln Prairie Conference win Wednesday, May 26.
On the road against the Bombers, Okaw Valley scored eight runs in the first two innings to jump out early.
In the fifth inning, the Timberwolves plated four more runs to end the game at the end of the inning.
Okaw Valley pounded out 13 total hits.
Jacob McQuire recorded three hits, and Eli Hagerman and Kadan Miller each had two hits.
Hagerman batted in four runs, and Miller plated three.
Three Timberwolves combined for the shutout.

Sullivan Girls’ Track Places Third, Nuzzo Breaks Pole Vault Record

The Redskins girls’ track and field team finished out its regular season this week and ended on a record-breaking note.
Sullivan girls team placed third in its final home quadrangular meet of the season, and Sofia Nuzzo broke the pole vault record.
Sullivan scored 49 for third, and Shelbyville won the meet with 90 points. Warrensburg-Latham took second with 80 points, and St. Teresa placed last with 22 points.
Not only did Sofia Nuzzo break the record with a vault of 9 feet 25 inches but she broke her sister Carlin’s record.
She placed first in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 2.75 meters. Read More
Sullivan Track Teams Perform Well In Home Meet

The Sullivan girls’ and boys’ track and field teams hosted senior night before a meet against several other schools Friday.
Seniors from both teams were winners at their last regular-season home meet.
The girls’ team defeated Arcola, Cerro-Gordo, Cumberland and St. Teresa with a score of 96, which was 21 points better than Cerro Gordo. Arcola placed third with 36 points.
Several Redskins placed first in their events, and all four relay teams took first.

Darush Competes At NJCAA Golf National Championship

Addison Darush, a 2019 SHS graduate, competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Golf National Championship from May 10-14 at Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla. Darush recently graduated from John A. Logan College with an associates’ degree in science. Read More

Softball
The Okaw Valley softball team played one game this week, and it was a doozy.
The Timberwolves hosted Arcola Wednesday, May 19, in Bethany.
The Purple Riders scored a run in the third inning, but Okaw Valley countered with a run in the fourth inning to tie the game.
The Timberwolves plated two more runs in the sixth, but Arcola scored two runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings tied at three.
The game ended when the Timberwolves walk-offed a run in the bottom of the eighth for the 4-3 victory.
Grace Bunfill recorded three of the Timberwolves six team hits, and Avery Bruns had one RBI.
Bunfill pitched 7 1/3 innings and struck out 15. Lana Ashley pitch for two outs of the game. Read More
