SHS Varsity Girls Volleyball team started the season off strong with a straight set victory over Meridian Monday night.

Sullivan HS students Piper Conlin, Grace Crothers, Savanna Dendy, Lillian Hood, and Avery Renfro won 1st place in the Apex 2025 4V4 Sand Volleyball Tournament, winning $200 and a 1st place trophy for the school’s volleyball program.

The Sullivan High School volleyball program hosted University of Illinois head coach Chris Tamas and members of the Fighting Illini women’s volleyball team for an exciting one-day camp that was open to freshman through senior athletes on Wednesday, July 9th.
Tamas, now in his eighth season as head coach since being hired in February 2017, has transformed Illinois into a force in the Big Ten and on the national stage. Under his leadership, the Illini have compiled a 149–94 overall record (.613) and secured five NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by a memorable 2018 Final Four run. Before his tenure at Illinois, he served as an assistant coach at Nebraska under Hall of Famer John Cook (2015–2017), as well as at Cal Poly, Minnesota, and UCRiverside.

The Sullivan Blue Dolphins swim team was in Deerfield the weekend of June 21st, the first time the team has traveled to the Chicago area to compete, taking a team of 20 swimmers to compete in this meet. At the meet, the Dolphins swam in a short-course pool for prelims and swam in a long-course pool outside for finals. The Dolphins team took 4th place overall out of 17 teams and was the only downstate team competing.

Annika Kelley of Sullivan earned her 7th National title on June 27th at the 2025 UTA Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Taekwondo school did not go as a group to the UTA nationals this year, but Annika attended and competed in weapons and forms. She has set a personal goal for herself to earn 10 National titles by the time she is 13 years old. With receiving her 7th one at 10 years old, she is well on her way. She also took 3rd place in traditional weapons. This is the third year in a row she has won 1 national title in Creative Weapons. On May 5th she participated in the Omaha National Martial Arts Championship, where she won 2 National titles. Her next event will be July 25th and 26th, a Karate-based National championship through the Ozark Mountain National Championship.

The Illinois Coaches Association and the Shriners of Illinois will present the 51st Annual Illinois High School Shrine Game, scheduled for Saturday, June 21, at Tucci Stadium on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. Kickoff is at 11:00 a.m., with pregame festivities beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Lake Land College TRIO students were recently honored at an annual banquet. During the event, several students received awards.
The Leadership Award was presented to Emma Skowronski, Sullivan, for leading student involvement and serving as a TRIO ambassador. Katherine Carlson, Shumway; Jasmine Gast, Charleston; Eric Stanley, Charleston; and Aleah Wallis, Shelbyville, also received recognition as nominees for the Leadership Award.

Archer McPheeters, 7th grade student at Okaw Valley Middle School, finished 1st at the IESA Class 1A State Track and Field Finals in East Peoria held May 16th and 17th. Archer set a new state record in the pole vault with a vault of 8’ 11 3/4”. Archer also placed 7th in the 400 meter with a time of 106.83. Archer is the daughter of Mindy and Aron McPheeters.
