Upends ALAH’s perfect conference record

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

It was a situation all too familiar for Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond.

Just a week earlier, the Lancers were down 6-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, made the comeback, and won in extras in Arcola to maintain their perfection in LOVC play.

But perfection ended Thursday night, and it came at the hands of Okaw Valley, 6-5, sealed by Amy Orris’ bases loaded, two out, two RBI single to right centerfield.  Read More

Windsor/Stew-Stras Takes Advantage of early miscues

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

All Windsor/Stew-Stras had to do at the plate Saturday consisted of one big inning–the first to be exact.

The Comets took advantage of a poor start at the mound by Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond’s Jeremy Plank–six walks and four earned runs in 2/3 an inning–to score nine of their 14 runs on the day, en route to a 14-1 five inning victory.

“You have to throw strikes,” said ALAH coach Craig Moffett. “If pitchers don’t throw strikes, you don’t really have a chance to do anything defensively.” Read More

ALAH boys finish fourth in front of SOV

Even despite picking up extra points in both the 300m hurdles and the pole vault, the SOV girls’ track team fell behind Neoga and Central A&M to take third in Tuesday’s bi-county meet.

SOV earned 110 points, five-and-a-half out from Neoga, and 15 out from the first place Lady Raiders.

Emily Neuhauser took first in the 100m dash (12.78 seconds), as well as fourth in the 200m (27.43). Amanda McClain tripled up individually taking first in the long jump (17 feet, 2 1/2 inches), 200m dash (25.83), and 400m (1:01.00). Read More

Final inning nearly provides comeback for Raiders

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Pitching has been pretty good recently for the Redskins baseball team.
Saturday Nick Frerichs two-hit Danville Schlarman en route to a 14-0 win, and Tuesday Shane Atchison returned the favor with a complete game two-hit gem of his own against Central A&M, striking out nine and walking three along with the two hits.
“Shane has been solid all season,” Redskins head coach Troy Rogers said. “He knows how to pitch, he’s a bulldog on the mound—he’s out there with no sleeves because he’s crazy—he worked ahead in the count with a relatively small and low strike zone. In the last inning specifically he kept his composure and finished exceptionally well.” Read More

Wood Wins Mr. EIU in First Year Competing

Wood3Sullivan native already looking to next year

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

After several years of training, Sullivan native and EIU junior kinesiology major Alex Wood recently won the annual Mr. EIU bodybuilding competition last month.

“I found out about the Mr. EIU competition my freshman year, in 2011,” Wood said. “I went and watched and knew I wanted to compete before I graduated. I originally was going to compete in 2012, but I decided on waiting so I could improve even more. Winning Mr. EIU is awesome. I can’t really put it into words. People asked me how I felt after the show, and I honestly just couldn’t believe it. It took a few days for it to finally settle in, and it finally hit me.”

Wood said he started lifting weights for the first time as a ‘skinny’ framed eighth grader, and through hard work, learning as much as possible, and continuous goal setting and reaching has he achieved as much success as he has. Read More

Errors, Lack of Offense Do Redskins in vs T-Town

Nine unearned runs cost Sullivan potential upset

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Take away the second and third innings in the field against Teutopolis Tuesday and in the end, there would have been a 2-1 upset win for the Redskins against a perennial state power instead of a 10-2 loss; if only that would have happened.

A home run over the left centerfield wall was the only run in the first, and turned out to be the only earned run allowed by Sullivan in the game.

That was when the Redskin defensive woes that plagued them in losses to Cerro Gordo-Bement, Pana, and Mattoon returned. Read More

Knights finish tied for last with three points

by Keith Stewart

Neither area boys’ track team had a strong performance at Saturday’s indoor meet hosted by Charleston at EIU’s Field House. Sullivan-Okaw Valley didn’t earn any points, while Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond tallied just three. Nonetheless, both teams did see some personal improvements on which they hope to add as the outdoor season begins later this week. Read More

Defeat Seneca 25-20, 26-24

by Kirk Whitaker
Reporting in Heyworth

The Arthur-Lovington seventh grade volleyball team signed off as the third best team in class 1A Tuesday with a victory over Seneca. But they had to first win two prior state  matches to get there.

Behind solid hitting from Taylor Powell and Marissa Herschberger, Arthur-Lovington’s seventh grade volleyball team first took down Blue Ridge 25-16 in the first set of Saturday’s Class 1A State Tournament in Heyworth. With a 22-16 advantage in the second, AL forced a Blue Ridge timeout, and it looked as if there would be déjà vu and an easy state win for the Pages, who brought a 21-1 record to the tourney.  Read More

Cavaliers pull away in 26-22 win

Chester Reeder still remembers what is was like to be in fourth grade playing basketball.

“I remember my coaches, and I still remember the plays that we ran,” he said.

The first year SHS varsity coach, drawing on his still fond memories, decided last year to form the Future Redskins basketball league, a youth basketball league in Sullivan geared towards both building skills at an early age and getting the Sullivan youth interested in the sport. Read More

Get St. Thomas More Tues. in Danville sectional

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

The final scoreboard read 44-26 in favor of the Knights Friday, as they downed Arcola for their third straight regional crown, but early on, the game was much closer than the final score showed.

It took till 4:09 to go in the second for the Knights to hit their first triple of the night, courtesy of Clayton Honn, but the bomb gave Arthur an 11-10 advantage.

Yes, only 11-10 midway through two quarters, no typo.

The first score of the game came from a single free throw from Riders sophomore Austin Shaffer with just over five to go in the first, and the score was tied at six after a quarter. Read More
