Four turnovers to start extra period OV’s demise

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Oh what a difference a few practices make.

After coming off a 35 point margin loss from Arthur-Lovington last Friday, Okaw Valley showed up ready for Heritage Villa Grove in LOVC play Tuesday night.

OV held a 13-11 advantage at the end of one, but the Timberwolves let it get away for a little while in the second. With 11 lead changes in the first half, Heritage came round to take hold of a 32-23 lead at the half.

“We played well at times, we struggled at times,” said OV head coach Tony Sparks. “We were down double digits at one point, but I was proud of the way we battled back and trusted our stuff and each other and got back into the game.” Read More

Outdoes Argenta for another conference win

by Keith Stewart

And one, and one, and one.

Sure, that could describe the manner in which Sullivan’s girls’ basketball team has racked up win after win this season (13 in a row), but it more accurately describes the fashion in which they secured their most recent 68-34 victory over conference opponent Argenta-Oreana.

“That hurt us early,” said Argenta coach Jeff Shumate.

Sullivan converted on three of five and-one opportunities in just the first half and were helped along by the aggressive post play of Brittin Boyer, who earned 11 points and seven rebounds in the same stretch.

The Lady Red established a lead early and ran away with the game going on a 9-0 run in just two minutes during the first quarter. Read More

Beats state-ranked Clinton by one point

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

It  sure was fun to watch.

Sullivan and Clinton, the two girls’ teams atop the Okaw Valley Conference, proved why they were the OVC’s best Saturday night.

After what felt like a lead change after each possession—16 in just the second half—Clinton senior guard Haley Toohill slashed to the bucket and dropped a bucket to put the Lady Maroons up 70-68 with 15 seconds to go. Read More

Sullivan Sends Statement with Conference Win Friday

Continues on with four-game win streak

To the Okaw Valley Conference–we will be taken seriously–sincerely, Sullivan. #RESPECT #AlliterationIsCool.

That was Friday night’s text message or tweet, or what have you, after Sullivan’s 47-39 victory over conference foe Argenta-Oreana.

“I told them, they had a great opportunity tonight to send a message to the Okaw that they better show up to play us, and I think we did that,” said Sullivan head coach Chester Reeder. “People are going to have to play us well. We’re not perfect by any means. We’re not unbeatable, but people are going to have to show up to play us.”

The Redskins combined four quarters of defense with spurts of perimeter and paint offense to send the Bombers packing Friday night. After a contested first quarter finally gave way with the Redskins leading 12-10, Sullivan pushed ahead in the second. Read More

Don’t tell Sheri McCain that her team is 8-1, let alone undefeated in their conference.
Seriously.
It’s not that the Sullivan girls’ head coach isn’t aware of that fact. She’d just rather you not jinx things.
“It’s a good feeling for them, because when I first took over, I don’t think people thought Sullivan would be at the top of the conference or undefeated at this stage,” said McCain. “I’m happy for how hard they’ve worked these last couple years. They deserve this, this moment. But I told them, you can’t take anything for granted, and I think that’s what happened the first quarter.”
Thursday night, McCain and company travelled to Monticello, where they stood the chance of being knocked off of their 4-0 undefeated conference streak. And despite a scare from the first quarter, the Lady Red turned things around defensively and traveled the hour back with a 57-38 victory in tow.
“It was an aggressive game, but it was a good win on the road. We were tired. We had a new defense, and tonight we played in spurts. They were exhausted.”
Sullivan trailed quickly in the first despite Alyssa Marshall’s two-pointer to start the game. Monticello junior Layne Buzan responded by scoring the bucket and one, putting her team up 3-2. The Sages got out to as large as a seven-point lead before the Lady Red fought back. A Maggie Plank bucket cut the lead to five and was followed by Emily Neuhauser’s additional two after grabbing the offensive board.
The quick and nimble Neuhauser was Sullivan’s go-to girl Thursday, leading the night with a double-double in 24 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow friend and teammate Brittin Boyer also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Read More

Sullivan Guts Out Third Win in a Row Against Arcola Tuesday Night

Free throws down the stretch solidify victory

It’s true that moments during Tuesday night’s game between Sullivan and Arcola resembled an amateur session of the Harlem Globetrotters, what with the two alley-oops for the Redskins as well as a Nich Frerichs’ 2-pointer from a seated position on the hardwood.

“I don’t know. Somebody was with us on that shot,” said head coach Chester Reeder. “I was trying to call timeout and luckily they didn’t give it to me.” Read More

Windsor’s Allen also earns double duty

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Both Sullivan and Windsor came into Friday night’s game looking to get off the snide. Windsor previously fell short in overtime and was defeated by five by Shelbyvile—while Sullivan fell to Arthur and St. Anthony last week as well.

As such, last Friday’s game was hard fought. Yet with a close halftime score of 18-17 in favor of the Redskins, there were some exciting performances in the first half, especially from sophomore Ty Molzen.

The 6’4” Molzen scored Sullivan’s first two points off an offensive rebound and was responsible for five of Sullivan’s seven first quarter points and had 10 of Sullivan’s 18 points in the first half along with nine rebounds. Seven of Molzen’s rebounds in the first half were on the offensive glass. Read More

Plank to the Rescue, as Buzzer Beater Earns Lady Red Win Over A&M

Neuhauser adds 21, Boyer 16 in nail biter

As Sullivan’s Maggie Plank described it, “Why not?”
Despite a less than stellar first half, the Sullivan senior took over beginning in the third, when she scored eight points, three rebounds, and a timely steal, helping to pull her team within two of Central A&M.
And who else would the game come down to other than the senior?
But Plank had to be relied upon earlier with just 12.2 seconds left in the game when a foul sent her to the line for two. Down 65-67, Plank hit both shots, of course.
But then a foul immediately after sent A&M’s Ryan Dooley to the line. There, she made one of her two shots, leaving 10 seconds left for the Lady Red to make something happen.
Elissa Stewart sprinted up court and dished the ball to Emily Neuhauser, who went for the throat with a 3-pointer that ultimately fell short. But out of nowhere, it was none other than the senior who grabbed the offensive board and then threw it right back up.
Why not?
Plank’s determination paid off when her last ditch effort went in, earning Sullivan a tough 69-68 victory over the Lady Raiders Thursday night. She along with Neuhauser’s 21 point and Brittin Boyer’s 16 point performances go to show that so often it’s not what someone does, so much as when they do it.
“I can’t speak enough about her,” said head coach Sheri McCain of Plank. “She just came through with that senior leadership. It was her night. It was a magical moment for her. She deserved it.” Read More

Final two minutes spells Sullivan’s demises

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Coming into the game Sullivan knew it would be giving up a definite size advantage to St. Anthony. In the first half, the Redskins held the Bulldogs to 18 points, but trailed at the break 18-17 in spite of 9 first half points from junior guard Nick Frerichs.

“Holding a team to 18 points at halftime is something I knew we could do,” Redskins head coach Chet Reeder stated. “I just didn’t anticipate it happening in game two of the season. We dug in, competed, and rebounded well. On the defensive end of the court we played our tails off tonight, and I am proud of our kids for that. Nick started the game off aggressively and that was what we wanted to do in our game plan.” Read More

11 turnovers in first hard to overcome for T-Wolves

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Sullivan never trailed against Okaw Valley in their non-conference meeting last Thursday in Bethany, which had a turnover in the style of play compared to their first game against Teutopolis.

By the end of the first quarter Sullivan forced more turnovers (11) than they did the whole game Monday (eight). Junior Emily Neuhauser and senior Maggie Plank each accounted for three steals in the first quarter.

“Our effort was greatly improved from Monday,” Redskins head coach Sheri McCain stated. “The girls came out ready tonight. I don’t know if they were quite ready for T-town, but we turned it up a notch on defense tonight. We wanted to start with our press and get some deflections. The whole goal was to get easy buckets and get out ahead, and they did a fabulous job.”  Read More
