Returning super sectional team
devours Sullivan

Sullivan opened the season Monday night at powerhouse Teutopolis–as in, the Teutopolis that graduated zero seniors from last year’s team that reached the super sectional and lost to Nashville by seven points…Nashville, as in the team that went on to win the state championship. And as if to be loud and clear of their intentions this year, T-Town’s caliber was clearly still in tow as they cruised to a 67-24 win over Sullivan.

“They play exceptional basketball,” said head coach Sheri McCain. “The tradition down here, it is what it is, and that’s why they’re a great team. In one aspect, it’s tough to play them at the beginning of the season, but the next aspect is it’s going to be one of the best team’s we’ll see all season.” Read More

Late interception ends contest

For the first time since 2006, Arthur was the site of a second round IHSA playoff football game. Saturday the Knights took on top seeded Maroa-Forsyth and gave the best team in the state in Class 1A all they could handle and then some.

Maroa was held to its lowest point total—24 points—all season, even dating back to last season, and the Knights were the only team to have a second half lead on the Trojans this season as well.

The Knight defense came out strong and held the vaunted Trojan offense—headlined by Jack Hockaday, a Division I caliber athlete with scholarship offers from multiple Big 10 schools—to just six points in the first quarter and 18 in the first half. Read More

Inherits Windsor once again Thursday

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

After Atwood-Hammond defeated Okaw Valley in two sets, they gave top seeded Arthur-Lovington a run for their money. But the Lancers finished off the Rajenes 25-23, 25-19, in their final volleyball match before Atwood-Hammond annexes with Arthur-Lovington next school year.

In the first set, the Lancers had eight unforced errors including service errors and missed kill opportunities.

The set initially was back and forth, but with the score 21-16 in favor of Arthur, things took an interesting turn.  Read More

Poor passing and third set lifts get the best of AL

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

It was supposed to be the last hurrah.

Tuesday night’s game between Arthur-Lovington and Heritage in Arthur was the final home game in the 34 year career of Lancer head coach Val Cornwell and the Lancers (22-3) looked primed and ready to send their coach off with a bang against Heritage, whom the Lancers had easily put away in two sets in the LOVC Tournament. Defensive effort creates for well- rounded performance

Traveling to LOVC rival Villa Grove Friday night, Arthur/Lovington-Atwood/Hammond not only had a conference matchup on the line but also their early qualification into the postseason. The Knights, who lost to VG last year 41-0 would have neither to worry about by the night’s end, as they cruised to a 49-22 win over the Blue Devils, improving to 6-1 on the season and 5-1 in the LOVC.

Villa Grove, however, was the first to strike, marching steadily downfield primarily with their run game, which accounted for the touchdown on fourth and goal on the three yard line. The point-after-attempt did not succeed, but Villa Grove took a 6-0 lead with 6:31 left in the first quarter. Read More

Ends season 20-2 in historic fashion

by Keith Stewart

You could certainly say OVMS’s third place finish at the IESA state baseball tournament has been, for some time, in the making.

Taking the head coach position six years ago, Chris Nichols recalls first talking to his team in 2008 about a state run.

They ended up managing one win on the season.

But Nichols’ teams steadily improved each year, from that one win season to three-peat regional champions and now a third place finish at the state tournament. Read More

Competing at home and in recognition of their seniors, the SOV cross country team hosted Shelbyville, Tuscola, and Arthur/Lovington for their final meet at Tabor Park for the season.

Boys and girls ran together Tuesday evening, with SOV’s girls finishing six in the top 10 to easily take first place, while the boys were led by junior Ethan Lehman, who after battling with a group of Shelbyville runners throughout most of the three mile trek catapulted to second place. Read More

Monticello Doesn’t Earn Win Easily as SOV Puts the Pressures On

SOV does what no other team this year has

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

Coming into last Friday night’s matchup, Monticello’s defense had been touted as one of, if not the best defenses in the area. And rightfully so.

Allowing just over an average of six points per game through five weeks of football, the Sages had made a name for themselves among OVC huddles. They were even plastered across the front of the Decatur Herald and Review’s sports section earlier that day.

But none of this seemed to matter to SOV’s football team, who travelled to Monticello as the expected homecoming appetizer and though, yes, did lose, posted 14 points, the most any team has scored on the Sages this season and nearly half of what they had allowed all year, not to mention, making for a game that was either team’s win or loss up until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Despite second half possession, Knights unable to score

by Keith Stewart

St. Anthony head soccer coach Scott Demers wasn't happy with how his upper classmen were playing Tuesday afternoon so he benched them.

In their place went freshmen and sophomores.

Whether you agree with the move or not, it paid off for the Bulldogs when freshman Donovan Hammer scored on a cleanup after a loose ball found its way in the Knights' box with 5:29 remaining in the first half.

"We had an issue with going for the ball so I took out our starters and put in freshman," said Demers. "The seniors, the starters showed they didn't want to play, or their focus was on personal matters. Read More

Sullivan finishes sixth

Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

With a record of 13-0—a school record accomplished after last Thursday’s victory over Cerro Gordo—the Arthur-Lovington Lancers took their perfect record into the Arcola Invitational Saturday, but with a slightly different lineup.

Junior Jessica Davis fractured the tip of her right ring finger and was unable to play in the tournament Saturday.

But that didn’t stop the Lancers from opening the day bright and early facing a pumped up Arcola squad.  Read More
