During the IHSA Class 2A girls’ basketball tournament, so far, the Sullivan girls’ team has been a team of two halves.
In the semifinal of the regional, the No. 1 seeded Sullivan team trailed No. 7 seeded Warrensburg-Latham by one at halftime.
In the regional championship game, Sullivan and No. 4 seeded Villa Grove were tied.
In the semifinal of the sectional, the Redskins committed 15 turnovers and trailed Edwards County by five points at halftime.
But Sullivan coach Sheri McCain’s motto all along has been, “It isn’t how you start; it’s how you finish.”
And in the second half of each of these tournament games, Sullivan outscored its opponents by a combined total of 52 points to win all three games and advance to its second-straight sectional championship. Read More

After a hiccup in the Central Illinois Conference Tournament in Decatur last week, the Sullivan girls’ basketball team clinched the regular CIC championship by defeating Tuscola on senior night Friday.
To avenge the upset loss in the semifinals of the CIC tournament to the Warriors, who eventually won the tournament, Sullivan had to wait an extra day because inclement weather Thursday postponed the game until Friday.
“We had such a fun and exciting night for, not only our seniors, but our entire team,” said Sullivan coach Sheri McCain. “We had such an amazing crowd and student section tonight. These girls played with such intensity. They were on a mission and that was to avenge the loss from the tournament and win the conference outright. I am so very proud of these young ladies.”
Sullivan took advantage of a 12-1 second-quarter run to squash any ideas of another upset.
After the 22-9 halftime lead, Sullivan tacked on four more points to its lead in the third.
In the fourth quarter the Redskins blew open the game with a 21-6 run and the 56-24 win.
“It was a great way to end our regular season on senior night,” McCain said. Read More

After placing a disappointed fourth in the Central Illinois Conference Tournament with a loss to host St. Teresa last Friday, the Sullivan girls’ basketball team bounced back to defeat the Bulldogs to stay undefeated in the CIC regular season game in Decatur Monday night.
In the first meeting, St. Teresa had a 16-point lead by halftime, but the Redskins came out with a better start in the Monday rematch with a 16-10 first quarter lead.
The Bulldogs battled back to take a 26-22 halftime lead, but the second half the game Sullivan took over.
In the third, the Redskins went on a 21-13 run for blow the game open, then held on in the fourth quarter for the 54-48 win.
“I thought we played a tremendous game defensively tonight,” said Sullivan coach Sheri McCain. “We gave up 68 points to them on Saturday night, and tonight we held them to 48. We followed the game plan and did a great job attacking the basket.”
Lilly Null led the Redskins with team-highs of 17 points, seven steals and five assists.
“Lilly Null played a phenomenal game for us,” McCain said. “She was the difference offensively for us in the first half, and Avery Still was the difference in the second half.”
Avery Still hit double-digit scoring with 10 points, and Esther Miller followed with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Josie Orris recorded eight points, and Emily White added five. Read More

It was an eventful week for the Sullivan girls’ basketball team.
The Redskins defeated Central A&M to stay undefeated in the Central Illinois Conference, earned top seed in the CIC Tournament, moved up to the No. 3 team in the Associated Press Class 2A state rankings and knocked off Shelbyville in first round of the tournament.
Thursday, Jan. 17, the Redskins defeated the Raiders with the help of 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists from freshman Lilly Null.
“Lilly Null played her best game of the season,” Sullivan coach Sheri McCain said. “I am so proud of how she stepped up tonight.”
After falling behind four points in the first quarter, the Redskins turned a 20-8 second-quarter run into a 29-21 halftime lead.

After winning 14-straight games including 4-0 in the Central Illinois Conference, the Sullivan girls’ basketball team has risen to the No. 5 team in the Associated Press Class 2A State rankings.
But Sullivan coach Sheri McCain does not want her players to become complacent.
Thursday, Jan. 10, the Redskins stayed undefeated in the CIC after knocking off Clinton.
Instead of blowing out the Maroons in the first quarter as Sullivan has done with most opponents this season, the Redskins gradually increased their lead each quarter. Read More

The Sullivan girls’ basketball team knocked off host Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond in the championship game of the Knights Holiday Classic December 22.
Unlike the first meeting between the two teams a month before in which Sullivan was up by 20 before halftime, Sullivan had a more difficult time putting the Knights away.
Sullivan jumped out early to a 17-7 first quarter lead, but the Knights outscored the Redskins 9-4 in the second quarter to cut the lead to 26-21 at halftime.
Sullivan stretched the lead in the third quarter to 10 points.
“We did not play exceptionally well today, and that is in large part due to the fact that ALAH played us pretty tough,” said Sullivan coach Sheri McCain. “The girls have played four games in three days, and tonight I think fatigue showed a bit in our outside shooting.” Read More

The No. 10 Class 2A state-ranked Sullivan girls’ basketball team kept on rolling last week with three more nonconference wins.
The Redskins knocked off Mattoon Monday, Pana Saturday and Okaw Valley Thursday to improve its record to 11-1 on the season.
Monday night against the Green Wave, Sullivan jumped out to a 12-0 lead with just under three minutes in the first quarter when Emily White hit a 3-pointer on an out-of-bounds play.
Mattoon cut the lead to 16-11, but Sullivan scored the next four points for a 20-11 halftime lead.
To start the third quarter, Avery Still made two baskets, and Josie Orris hit a shot to extend the lead to 26-11.
Mattoon battled back to 26-17 until Lilly Null pulled up at the top of key hitting a three pointer for a 29-17 lead.
Null followed that with a transition basket to extend the lead to 31-18.
With just less than two minutes in the third quarter, Esther Miller stopped a Mattoon run at 37-27 with a steal at half court and a transition layup.
The score stayed the same until Miller hit two free throws to make it 39-27 with about seven minutes left.
Still extended the lead to 11 points 43-32 with a rebound put-back and another shot down low with 4:41 left in the game.
Miller scored down low and later made free throws to extend the lead to 47-33 with three minutes left in the game. Read More

The Sullivan girls’ basketball team picked up more wins this past week by defeating Shelbyville on the road last Thursday (Nov. 29) and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Monday night in Arthur.
Against ALAH, the Redskins fell behind early in the first quarter when the Knights jumped out to a 7-2 and 12-6 leads.
Sullivan made a late first-quarter push with its consistent full–court press and scored the last 13 points to push ahead 19-12.
The Redskins kept the pressure on in the second quarter to outscore the Knights 21-8 for a 40-20 halftime lead.
“It wasn’t a real good shooting night for us as we shot 13-for-53 from the field (2-point field goals),” said Sullivan coach Sheri McCain. “The good news is we crashed the boards and had 54 total rebounds. We played a good first half and became a little complacent in the second half.” Read More

It is not often an Okaw Valley Junior High student gets to tell her friends that she’s jetting off to New York, North Carolina and Russia.
But that was the journey Reese Nichols just finished taking.
Nichols competed for the Team USA in the double mini trampoline event at the World Age Group Competition in Russia this past weekend including top athletes from each participating country.
She finished 10th in the world but missed advancing by two spots (3/10 of a point). Only the top eight moved on to the finals.
“She’s heartbroken and feels she could have done better,” said her father Chris Nichols, “but the competition was obviously elite.”
Chris stayed home while his wife, Bethany, made the trip with Reese to Russia, where Reese competed at 2:30 a.m. Read More
