Lady Redskins Shoot Down Meridian Hawks

News Progress Posted on December 14, 2016 by webmasterDecember 13, 2016

Several things were learned in Sullivan’s 53-34 triumph over Meridian at home Dec.12.

First, nobody enters Chloe Riley’s lane one-on-one and leaves with a layup.

Second, the Redskins can win without multiple threes from Addison Darush.

And third, half a second is more than enough time for Haley Rose to get off a three pointer. Read More

Sullivan’s Lady Redskins’ team came together for a 51-35 win over Warrensburg-Latham Cardinals, Dec 8.

“First time this year we played as a team both offensively and defensively,” coach Sheri McCain said of Sullivan’s consistency.

“Everyone who came off the bench contributed in one way or another,” McCain continued, emphasizing Tatum Ellis had a great all around game.

Ellis led the Redskins with three steals, making four field goals and four from the free throw line for 12 points. Read More

Three Lady Knights Finish Strong for Win

For all but eight minutes and three seconds of Monday night’s non-conference game between Sullivan and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond’s girls’ basketball teams, the contest was close, intense, and hard fought.

The only problem for Sullivan were those eight minutes and three seconds that were the difference. From the end of third and into the final quarter.

Sullivan and ALAH swapped two point advantages after the first two quarters respectively--ALAH having no answer for Addison Darush, and the Redskins being unable to contain Peyton Wellbaum in the post.

It looked as though the Knights would take just a three point lead into the final quarter, but then Megan Fifer got the ball from the left wing beyond the arc. Read More

Although the scoreboard read a 30-point defeat for the Redskins boys’ basketball team Monday night against St. Anthony, not everything was as bad as it seemed.

Sullivan kept the deficit manageable before the fourth quarter, staying within eight points the majority of the way. At the start of the fourth the wheels fell off the wagon.

Bulldogs junior Drew Gibson went on a personal 7-0 run—three layups and a free throw to finish — to start what would end as St. Anthony’s 21-2 run to finish the game. The rest was history thanks to their length and 1-2-2 press defense. Read More

Down three with 18 seconds to go, the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights faced a three point deficit with the ball, coming out of a timeout, against Oakwood Fithian, coached by former Sullivan grad Craig Black.

The game that was tied at halftime and saw the Knights come back from six down early in the fourth tied the game again with two minutes to go. It came down to the last shot.

Senior Shandon Herschberger got the ball at the top of the key and heaved up a desperation shot but got too much backboard, and the shot rolled forward off the rim, taking away a game the Knights had taken from their grasp. Read More

Warriors Take Down Redskins Despite Hot Start

News Progress Posted on December 7, 2016 by webmasterDecember 6, 2016

•December 7, 2016•

After starting the first six minutes of the game on a 13-4 run, featuring three 3-pointers from Addison Darush, it looked as if the Lady Redskins basketball team was going to keep its foot on the gas and get a big CIC win.

But it was not meant to be.

Turnovers plagued Sullivan, and Tuscola beat the Lady Redskins down the floor several times throughout the game for easy layups in transition, taking the game 65-54.

After Tuscola stole a Sullivan pass and took it the other way for a layup, Darush hit two of her game high six triples.  Read More

Timberwolves Finish Strong Against Hilltoppers

What in the first half looked as though it would be a close game Nov. 28 got blown out of the water in the second half by host Okaw Valley’s two biggest scorers.

It all started with the Timberwolves down 12-8 in the final seconds of the first quarter. It ended with a 45-27 Okaw Valley win.

Mt. Pulaski had scored with just over six seconds left, looking to take the momentum into the second, but Paige Robinson didn’t get the memo.

Robinson took the inbounds pass and calmly took the rock just over half court before pulling a “Steph Curry” and swishing a shot just inside the half court stripe to cut the deficit to one. Read More

Strong Second Half Gives Braves Win over Sullivan

News Progress Posted on November 30, 2016 by webmasterNovember 29, 2016

•November 30, 2016•

Sullivan’s Lady Redskin’s strong first half wasn’t enough to keep Mt. Zion from a 49-45 win November 28.

Sullivan outscored the visiting Lady Braves 13-4 in the first quarter and had a 23-14 lead at the half. A third quarter 16-9 effort brought Mt. Zion’s team back as a 19-13 fourth quarter tipped the scales against Sullivan.

“We started the game off well and played great defense the first half, only giving up 14 points,” Sullivan coach Sheri McCain said.

“We were not mentally tough in the second half and had too many unforced turnovers,” she continued, pointing out 47% free throw percentage and hitting two for seven in the fourth quarter cost the game.

Mt. Zion was 10-12 from the free stripe in the fourth quarter. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
