Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond lost its home matchup with the reigning 2015 Class 1A state champion Purple Riders Oct 7. A back and forth rivalry game saw Arcola prevail 44-20.

However, what the football teams did to honor cancer survivor Kara Kuhns at halftime spoke volumes about both communities. ALAH graduate Kuhns worked for both school districts’ speech departments throughout her four-year battle with the disease. The teams on the field and fans in attendance gave Kuhns a standing ovation to show solidarity against a disease that afflicts millions of Americans every year. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month show your support by wearing pink proudly.

Arcola drew first blood in the contest with a 23-yard run for a touchdown at the five minute mark in the first quarter. Arthur hit back with a 40 yard completion to Kobe Wells on a well-designed play action pass. Wells’ catch set up the Knights’ first down from the Riders’ 36 yard line. Dakota Myers then brought the crowd to its feet with a 36 yard touchdown on a perfectly blocked screen pass. Will Cohan put both passes right where they needed to be despite intense pressure from a talented Arcola defense. ALAH’s two point attempt failed, and the Riders led 7-6 with 3:51 left in the first quarter.

ALAH head coach Dale Schuring said the team has been starting strong but struggling to maintain. “We have made a lot of improvements. Last several weeks out we have been 0-0 6-2. We have started out well; it is just a matter of maintaining it. I think our lack of depth has something to do with that. These kids just don’t get a break. “  Read More

The stands were packed on homecoming night, and through one quarter of play the game was a competitive six all thanks to a 6-yard Luke Harlan run.

That all changed with 11:15 to go in the second. By the end of the night A&M’s Raiders won 56-14.

In the second Raiders quarterback Jameson Smith took the rock 60 yards to pay dirt. Four minutes later he found running back Riley Black for an 85 yard touchdown on a swing screen on third down and 10, followed by a trick play for the two-point conversion, and the score was 22-6.

“We just didn’t do well offensively moving the ball” Redskins head coach Gerald Temples explained. “Defensively, we gave up big plays which we’ve done all year.”

It didn’t get much better as the night wore on. Read More

The third quarter has been the difference in all the losses for Sullivan Okaw Valley this football season.

The Redskins moved the ball on Clinton first in the second half, then scored via a 5-yard touchdown run from freshman quarterback Luke Harlan.

Harlan replacing an injured Brett Tuttle fired a two point conversion pass to Bryce Farris to put the game within one point.

“I thought he (Harlan) did a great job for a freshman,” Redskins’ head coach Gerald Temples congratulated. “We tried to make it simple. I thought he did a heck of a job. He took a beating a couple times, but I thought he stood in there and threw some good balls other times. I am very happy with him.”

Then it all unraveled. Again.

The ensuing play Clinton returned the kickoff for a touchdown, and after missing the PAT, extended the lead to 27-20. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
