2-pt third quarter nearly upends ALAH senior night

by Keith Stewart

While the Knights may have had a dismal two-point third quarter, at least they chose to score at the buzzer to help swing a bit of the momentum back to their bench heading into the final period where they would hold off the Purple Riders to win 46-40.
“I think the bucket at the end of the third was a huge one,” said Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond head coach Dale Schuring. “It toned them down just a little bit. I think big picture we just didn’t shoot the ball all that well tonight. Tyler [Schuring} was reasonable I think, but everyone seemed to struggle quite a bit.”

Boyer held to 10 in season-ending loss

The Lady Redskins’ season may have started with a big win over T-Town, but last Thursday it ended in dramatic fashion to a Lady Shoes team that was markedly different in both makeup and strategy. Though without Chelsea Hardiek and Danielle Repking, the Shoes had Anna Hartke back from an ACL injury. And holding both Brittin Boyer and Emily Neuhauser below their average points per game, the Shoes were able to squeeze out a 56-54 victory over Sullivan to win the Pana regional championship–much to the horror of any Sullivan player, parent, or fan.
“Mental mistakes tonight I think is what cost us,” said head coach Sheri McCain. “They played a great game. They came in and were prepared and were disciplined offensively and did the little things they needed to. They’re T-Town; they do that every year.” Read More

The Lady Timberwolves struggled to find an answer for Nokomis’ 5 foot, 10 inch senior Ashey Schneider last Wednesday in the Central A&M regional semi-final. Schneider finished with 24 points and seven rebounds and helped lead her team past OV 43-32.
“We knew what kind of player she was,” said Gardner. “We did our best. We were fronting her; we had different girls on her; we were trying to help weak side, but you have to give credit where credit’s due, and she had a phenomenal game. Had we had a shot fall here or there, then it could be the difference between a win or a loss. The girls battled hard, and they fought and did not quit. That’s the kind of team we are.”
OV was down 16-25 at the half after repeated issues getting shots to fall in both the first and second. But the Lady Timberwolves made a third quarter surge that was good while it lasted. Read More

Hagerman, Still combine for 52 points

By Matt Kracht

The Central A&M class 1A regional seedings were released Friday, and Okaw Valley immediately threw a wrench into the standings. Decatur LSA, who will be the one seed in the upcoming tournament, must have been confused as the three seeded Timberwolves looked the better squad. Peyton Hagerman scored a game high 27 points, and Devon Still added a double-double with 25 points on 10 rebounds in front of a capacity crowd.
And Timberwolves head coach Tony Sparks thought his team fed off the crowd’s energy early on.
“The regional seeding came out today. LSA was the one seed, and we got the three so the crowd was pumped. We are trying to peak at the right time of the year, and we played well tonight.”
Okaw Valley jumped all over the Lions from the opening tip surging to an 11-0 lead on baskets by Still and two early 3-pointers from Dylan Park. Read More

Hopes for regional championship bid dashed

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

The Lady Knights gave no. 2 seed Arcola all they wanted and more during the ISHA class 1A regional semifinal Tuesday night in Casey Westfield. With 25 seconds remaining and Arcola leading 49-42 Hannah Wallen knocked down back-to-back threes bringing the Knights to within one with six seconds remaining. Wallen, a freshman who has ice water running threw her veins, finished with a game high 22 points almost brought the Knights back from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit. But Arcola would hold off the attempt for a 51-48 win.
Head coach Craig Moffett’s team looked the better side for much of the game, and he was quick to point out the girls had nothing to hang their heads about. Read More

NP Sports Reporter

Sullivan defeated Central A&M 52-35 earning fifth place in the CIC Conference Tourney last Wednesday night in St. Teresa.
Zach Hrvol scored a game high 17 points coming on four 3-pointers, and Ty Molzen added 13 to secure the impressive win.
“We just have struggled so much offensively, and that is starting to change,” said Sullivan head coach Chester Reeder. “This is two games in a row now we have hit shots and got good looks. So hopefully that is snowballing, and, hopefully, we are starting to play our better basketball at the right time of the year.” Read More

Goal now is to win conference outright

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

One Knights’ fan traveled 1200 miles to see the Little Okaw Valley Conference championship game against the Hutsonville-Palestine Tigers in Arcola Saturday night. Arthur/Lovington-Atwood/Hammond made sure that fan, Danny Powell, left with a smile, defeating the Tigers 69-51.
“It is special. We have been fortunate enough to win a few and be in a couple finals. But you gotta appreciate it, and you can’t take it for granted because it’s not easy to do,” said head coach Dale Schuring. “It takes a lot to get to these games and even more to win them. The kids have done a great job.”
With Jermey Plank and Tyler Schuring acting as sharpshooters, the Knights’ offense looked like a well-oiled machine throughout the tournament.

Harris, Powell get victorious send-off

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Lady Knights honored Elyse Harris and Emily Powell Monday for senior night, mauling the LSA Lions in a dominant 48-23 performance. Kim Davis scored a game high 20 points and Hannah Wallen added eight points respectively.
The Lady Knights led 12-0 for most of the first quarter before Decatur LSA( Lutheran School Association) scored their first basket with under a minute remaining in the first quarter.
“I thought our defensive rotation and defensive block-outs were better than they had been,” said ALAH head coach Craig Moffett. “So those are two things we need to keep working on, but I was proud of the girls' effort tonight. They did a good job. Also we limited turnovers, and that is the key. If we can limit turnovers, rebound, and shoot with confidence, we can be dangerous.” Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
