Raiders’ comeback falls short

By Joe Wheeler
Reporting in Moweaqua

Up 21-0 at halftime, it was looking like a rout for SOV on what was shaping up to be an unfortunate senior night for the Central A&M Raiders. But this past Friday night the Redskins were lucky to get out of Mowequa with a win.

Things got started quickly for SOV after the Raiders’ first drive stalled, and the ‘Skins scored on their second play from scrimmage. A breakout Chanley Heykoop run to start the drive set things up for a 64-yard strike to Alec Ballinger on the ensuing play. The touchdown pass from senior quarterback Nick Frerichs would not be his last of the evening. Read More

Teamwork key in 3-set victory over Bement

By Joe Wheeler
Bethany Reporter

Bement was in town Thursday evening and looking to spoil Okaw Valley’s senior night for the ladies in black.

The Lady Bulldogs came out strong in the first set, scoring three in a row before OV would get on the board. Some Bement errors and two OV kills would even things up at four early in the set, and later the home team would string together six points in a row. Bement would battle back, one point at a time, to eventually tie it up at 15 all mid-set. Unfortunate errors then set the Lady Timberwolves back late in the set, and they would eventually fall 20-25. If there was a chance for an upset in the Central Illinois Conference last Thursday between the Central A & M the Lady Redskins, the first set certainly didn’t show it. The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond soccer team was adamant about not losing again to Decatur LSA last Friday, and instead came away with a 4-1 regional quarterfinal win to advance to the Warrensburg-Latham regional semifinal against Monticello Wednesday, October 15.

The Knights previously fell to LSA 7-1 September 27 in the Decatur St. Teresa tournament. And according to head coach Jeff Trower, the Lions may have come into the rematch a bit too headstrong. Read More

Shelbyville quickly got to work with kill after kill, but their streak would slow down for a moment with the Lady Red storming the court following a second time out called by varsity head coach Krista Smith, who gave an empowering pep talk. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
