Miscues at the mound spell defeat for Lancers

Three walks and three players hit by a pitch, all in the top of the first, gave Sullivan two unearned runs, a helping hand in their 8-1 win over Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Monday.

Taking the mound only the second time this year, the Lancers’ Brooke Tab started the inning off walking Bailee Pratt. Elissa Stewart followed with a ground out to short, but Tabb added another walk and then hit her next three batters, scoring two before being replaced by Katie Wildman. The Lancer ace struggled early herself, as Brittin Boyer then stepped to with a single off of Mycaela Miller’s glove to score two more. Read More

Hart’s own 2-run homer lifts Sullivan

You could feel the air sink at Sullivan’s Leon Lane field Saturday after Decatur LSA’s Mason Hinton hit a two-run homer in the first on a full count.

“It looks like he’s seeing a beach ball when he goes up there,” said LSA coach Erik Johansen of Hinton. “He’s hitting everything on the screws. He did all this week and hit a home run yesterday.”

Nick Frerichs, who was at the mound for Sullivan, then walked his next batter, though managed a strikeout to get out of the early jab by the Lions. Read More

Track opportunity the extra perk

by Keith Stewart

It all sort of began with a missed half-court shot.

In her freshman year and under then girls’ JV basketball coach Kali Taylor, Mollie Bowman threw up an ambitious 3-point attempt–with more than enough time left on the clock mind you.

“If you know anything about basketball, you know that shooting from half court is usually not a good thing unless at the last second of a quarter,” said Taylor. Read More

Though more hits, Lady Red errors lead to extra outs

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

It didn’t take long for Sullivan’s errors to rear their head Monday evening against Charleston.

The first pitch to the first batter in the first inning to be exact.

Ali Finn’s grounder to shortstop was overthrown to first, allowing Finn to get to second. A sacrifice bunt and a single to right field later, Charleston had one of its five runs on a day when Sullivan couldn’t stop from shooting itself in the foot. It marked the first of five errors and despite outhitting the Trojans 11 to 8, Sullivan scored only two runs, all while leaving nine runners on base. Read More

Just three hits on the day between ALAH and OV

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

Tyler Schuring was a presence on the mound Wednesday. But Devon Still was a monster.

The OV senior worked the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond lineup, striking out 16. Still then worked his magic from the plate, tallying one of OV’s two hits on the day and then getting on base with an intentional walk in his team’s 2-0 win. Read More

For any college-bound high school senior, the transition from high school to college life is a big one. For Okaw Valley senior Shelby Dash, this transition will be even more significant since she has signed on to play volleyball at Central College in Pella, Iowa.

It all started when her club volleyball team, Twin City, played in a tournament where coaches from Central College saw her play and got in contact with her. She then visited the college campus this past November and made her decision in December. Dash will receive a yearly $14,000 academic scholarship and is enrolled in their four-year nursing program.
