Lake Shelbyvile Water Trail Flows
•October 2, 2019•
On Sunday, September 15, more than twenty kayakers gathered at Denham’s Pit near Allenville to launch Lake Shelbyville’s first Kayak Run. The weather was nearly perfect for the event which kicked off at 1 pm. Kayakers had transportation available for both them and their kayaks from the Sullivan Marina to the launch site. Kayakers were able to spot dozens of pelicans and herons, three bald eagles, and numerous other wildlife as they navigated their way down approximately nine miles of the Kaskaskia River and Lake Shelbyville.
A subgroup of the Sullivan Spark Parks and Recreation Committee hosted the event. It raised over $500, which the group hopes to use to help install a launch ramp near Denham’s Pit to make it easier to launch kayaks and possibly other watercraft. An overarching goal for the group is to formalize a Lake Shelbyville Water Trail including sites along the Kaskaskia and West Okaw rivers that lead into Lake Shelbyville.
