More Information Needed on Dog Food Program Decision
Dear Editor,
I read your article and a few things were missing, which might help make it clear why the decisions were made to discontinue the free dog food program from Mars Pet care.
Mars Pet care, formerly Kal-Kan, offers free dog food to area animal control facilities to help the counties and cities in the area in caring for and feeding the animals. Sam Donaker and I have been managing animal control for about 12 years now. In that period of time Kal-Kan was changed to the present Mars Pet care and consequently the program changed. We were required to send information annually about our population and each year more information was required to be in compliance with their program. I filled out all the forms as requested from Mars. The first we heard of a problem was when Sam called to schedule a pickup and was told Moultrie County Animal Control was no longer eligible for the program because we do not spay/neuter in house and use an application form for volunteers. If the program changed, we could then reapply.
