2014

In the 20 years that the Sullivan Community Education Foundation has been awarding grand money to local organizations and groups, this year saw close too, if not the largest, payout. A total of $56,226.85 was awarded at last Thursday’s teacher appreciation dinner to various groups for eduction related to projects. Of that amount, more than $10,000 were donated.

Thoughtful silence filled the room for a few moments during a discussion regarding Policy 8:30 during last Wednesday’s Arthur-Lovingotn school board meeting. According to the present handbook, Policy 8:30 states “Arthur-Lovington District 305 has established a policy that prohibits guns, ammunition, knives and other weapons from school property”. Although, with the Concealed Carry Law, that could change. Read More

News Progress Posted on March 13, 2024 by webmasterMarch 13, 2024

•March 13, 2024•

Gib Van Dine often comes up with inspiration for these columns, but it’s ordinarily a germ of an idea. Today, I should share my byline with him.

What I like about this one is the likelihood I’ll get some audience participation to prompt another column. Hey, I’m a busy guy, and I’ll take the help where I can get it. I encourage you to write to me with other examples, especially for your name.

His idea: given names that can be used in other ways. For the most part, those other uses are nouns and verbs, but I’ll save my save my favorite adjective for the end. Read More

Feast on Irish Pub Fare this St. Patrick’s Day

News Progress Posted on March 13, 2024 by webmasterMarch 13, 2024

•March 13, 2024•

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were different in 2020. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, many communities were forced to cancel their annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Typically lively, jovial gatherings of good-spirited revelers, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are beloved by Irish and non-Irish people alike.

Though the COVID-19 vaccines figure to help people across the globe return to a semblance of normalcy at some point in 2021, that long-awaited return to life as the world once knew it is unlikely to occur before mid-March. That means St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in 2021 will likely have to take place at home, much like they did a year ago. Read More

National Ag Week is March 17-23

News Progress Posted on March 13, 2024 by webmasterMarch 13, 2024

•March 13, 2024•

History of National Ag Week: Agriculture is the biggest food contributor in America. America is the net exporter of food, which means that this industry is a source of food and wealth. The rich history of agriculture in the U.S. attracted colonists to the area. Since most colonists were European, the styles of agricultural cultivation and production were Europe influenced as well. Colonists also brought a large amount of livestock with them to America, which caused changes in its natural landscape.

As the population grew, farms expanded, and settlements moved from the east into the west. This caused the agricultural industry to grow exponentially, with a larger variety of produce being rooted. Once the west was populated and cultivated, a wheat frontier was formed. The east was firmly set on cattle and livestock with only a handful of small-scale crops. On the other hand, the south was dominated by tobacco and cotton. Lastly, the north was dominated by people who planted only what they needed, anything in excess was sold to the market. Read More
