The Sullivan Fire Department moved forward with construction to add six additional bays making for a much roomier firehouse. The 8,100 square foot addition was added to the south side of the existing building at a cost of $760,687.25. 

Sullivan schools went above and beyond to receive the SchoolSearch 2013 Bright Star Award for the 12th time in 13 years. The awards looks as districts whose students’ academic performance ranks in the upper one third of Illinois school districts but whose expenditure per pupil ranks in the lower one-fourth of Illinois school districts for the previous year.  Read More

Eco-Meet Results

The 46th Annual Lake Shelbyville Eco-Meet, coordinated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was held at Camp Camfield Ecological Study Area on October 19th.

The Eco-Meet is an environmental competition for school students that are in junior high and high school. Junior Varsity teams are comprised of four students from grades seven and eight. Varsity teams are made up of four high school students from grades nine through twelve. A total of 140 students from 35 schools competed in this year’s event. Read More

Veterans Appreciation Month

Lake Land College is celebrating Veterans Appreciation Month by recognizing and honoring local Veterans throughout the month of November.  

During the week of Nov. 6-10, all Veterans throughout the Lake Land community are invited to add a photo from their time of service to a display in the Luther Student Center. Family members and friends are also invited to display a photo of a loved one who served. Picture frames and information cards will be provided. All photos can be picked up at the end of the week. Department on Aging to Provide Medicare Counseling During Open Enrollment Period

With the Medicare open enrollment period beginning on Sunday, Oct. 15, older adults looking to make changes to their Medicare coverage can receive trusted, unbiased, one-on-one counseling and assistance through the Illinois Department on Aging’s (IDoA) Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP).

“This is an exciting time for Medicare; with new drug price reductions on the horizon, it is imperative that you compare your current Medicare coverage to the 2024 options for Medicare health and drug coverage,” said Illinois SHIP Director Sandy Leith. “SHIP offers personalized service with your best interest in mind. Community Poetry Reading in Tuscola

There will be a public poetry reading at the Tuscola Vault Art Gallery on Saturday, October 28 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Everyone is invited to come listen or even share some of their favorite or original poems. 

Guest Poet, Dale Ernst is the author of the book, “Light Shining Through an Open Window,” which can be purchased on Amazon.com. Ernst is also a member of the Missouri State Poetry Society.

Artists Karen Honnold and Ariana R. Cherry will be hosting the poetry reading in the Flex Gallery at the Vault. The Vault is located at 100 N Main St in Tuscola near the Candy Kitchen. Students who have a love for poetry are also encouraged to attend.

Pritzker Administration Announces Small Business Grant Awards

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has announced the conclusion of the Back to Business (B2B) Restaurants, Hotels and Arts program with $156 million provided in relief funds. Through these three programs, nearly 4,000 grants went to businesses in over 500 cities, towns and localities in 95 counties across the state. Grantees in Moultrie County were Sullivan Marina and Campground, LLC in the amount of $10,452; Sidem, Inc doing business as Shooters Bar and Grill in the amount of $45,0000; Northend Pub and Grill, LLC in the amount of $50,000; Sol Del Mar II Inc. in the amount of $25,000 and The Little Theatre On The Square, Inc in the amount of $80,000.  Read More

Halloween is a festive day for children and adults alike. However, the abundance of candy and chocolate offered on and around Halloween can compromise diets designed to keep people healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity prevalence in the United States was 20.7 percent among children between the ages of six and 11 and 22.2 percent among 12- to 19-year-olds from 2017 to 2020. On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
