How to Show Your Support for Veterans

News Progress Posted on November 9, 2022 by webmasterNovember 9, 2022

•November 9, 2022•
Supporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans.
There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect. According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come. •November 9, 2022•
Whether you’re at work, commuting, or at home, being ready for harsh, frigid storms can lead comfort and even survival. November is Winter Weather Preparedness Month, and Nov. 7-11 is Winter Weather Preparedness Week. The week will culminate in a social media contest for Illinois residents.
“This is the ideal time to get ready for snow, ice, and brutal cold because Illinois weather can be pleasant one day, and a winter storm the next day,” said Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau.
“Each winter season, nearly 29,000 vehicle crashes occur in Illinois, producing 4,500 injuries and 80 fatalities. That is why it is imperative that people plan ahead and prepare for winter weather impacts,” added National Weather Service (NWS) Central Illinois Warning Coordination Meteorologist Edward Shimon. News Progress Posted on November 9, 2022 by webmasterNovember 9, 2022

Dear Editor,

For the past several decades, the Sullivan Area Ministerial Association has been helping meet the needs of people in Moultrie County. Over the course of a 12-month period, SAMA helps folks with needs in a variety of areas: Utilities, Rent, Automotive, Hotel stays, Food, Fuel, Christmas Certificates.
From 8/1/21 to 8/1/22, SAMA has distributed over $22,000. Most of these funds are given by participating SAMA churches, the generosity of area businesses, and individuals. Right now, the need is as great as it has ever been. SAMA depends on the ongoing generosity of those in Moultrie County to help us care for “the least of these.” Read More
