Lovington Chili Cookoff Fundraiser
A chili cookoff fundraiser was held on Saturday, October 1 at the park in Lovington. Six people entered their chili in the contest. Winners were first place: Rick Anklam, second place: Shawn Evans and third place and People’s Choice award went to LeRoy Floyd. The $250 meat bundle raffle winner is Angie Krapf.

The Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation (IRTAF) awards $36,500 in grant money to several public school educators (Pre-K through 12) statewide. IRTAF is affiliated with the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, a lobbying group for retired educators, with a current membership of over 40,000. National Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 through October 15. It’s a special time to recognize and celebrate the cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino/a/x individuals. I wanted to share this article written by Extension Educator Jenna Smith that shares some great sounding Latin American foods. Jenna says: while Hispanic and Latino are often used interchangeably, they have two different meanings. Hispanic refers to those whose descendants are from a Spanish-speaking country, while Latino refers to those from Latin America. Latino can include males or all genders, Latina includes females and Latinx is a gender-neutral term. The use of these terms is not without confusion and controversy. Read More

A Matter of Balance Falls Prevention Training

Chances are you know someone who has fallen or who is afraid of falling. A Matter of Balance is a proven program designed to help people manage concerns about falls and increase physical activity.
A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is conducted in eight two-hour sessions and uses group discussion, problem–solving strategies, videos, and gentle physical exercise. Older adults learn positive coping methods to reduce fear of falling and remain active and independent. A Matter of Balance help participants become more confident about managing falls by believing that they can increase their strength, find ways to reduce falls, and protect themselves if they do fall. In addition, participants report that they have increased the amount they exercise on a regular basis. Read More

Vote by Mail: If you would rather hand-deliver the ballot, follow all instructions as if placing in the mail; however, you may place the ballot in the Ballot Drop Box located outside on the corner of South Main St. and East Harrison St. next to the Post Office Drop Box and the City Utility Drop Box on the square. If you prefer, you can also hand deliver your ballot to the County Clerk’s office on the second floor of the Courthouse.

An open house celebration of the Sullivan Fire Protection District’s 40th anniversary was held. 600 people attended the weekend event.
Robert Hess was named to the Sullivan High School Who’s Who during the Sullivan Alumni Banquet. Seth Dunscomb was named to the Sullivan High School Hall of Fame. The award was presented to Dunscomb’s family. Read More

Illinois Deer Donation Program Launched

The Illinois Deer Donation Program launched with the start of deer archery hunting season on October 1. At this time and through deer hunting season, hunters can bring harvested deer to one of five partnering meat processors for donation.
Hunters do not have to pay the processing fee for donated deer, though processors ask that you call before going hunting to make sure they have space available. Read More

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
