Capital Recap: Lawmakers React to Leaked Draft Abortion Decision

Gov. JB Pritzker and Illinois Democrats warned of an “end to the constitutional right to privacy” if a leaked U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning the 1973 landmark decision in Roe v. Wade becomes finalized as precedent.
“It means women who lose access to the full suite of medical advances that give them choices in how and when they want to start a family are at risk,” Pritzker said at a morning news conference in Chicago.
At the same time, however, the Democrats touted a recent string of Illinois laws aimed at protecting the access to an abortion for Illinoisans and those visiting the state to receive reproductive health care. Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

Holocaust survivor Carl Ofisher visited Sullivan High School to tell his story. He was a survivor of the Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen, Liberose, Mauthausen and Kunskirchen concentration camps in Poland, Germany and Austria. His visit was part of a Sullivan Community Education Foundation sponsored workshop.
The northwest corner of the county was selected as the site of Moultrie County Animal Control facility. Read More

The Student LIFE Academy in Mattoon received an AMTRYKE (adaptive tricycle) from Sullivan AMBUCS last week. This amtryke was “recycled” from a previous owner. Student LIFE Academy is a program through the Eastern Illinois Area of Special Education (EIASE). On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
