Did you know that 11% of people in America are terrified of animals, including cats?
So claims the news release I just read promoting a book on phobias.
I haven’t independently verified this as fact, but if you were to visit my home at about 10 every night you’d witness the 15-minute window during which I’m terrified of my own cats, because that’s when they get the rip-roarin’ Zoomies.
But that’s not why I’m writing about this.
The copy writer says the book includes our fears “from agoraphobia to arachnophobia.”

Allenville and East Nelson Township voters would decide whether to be included in the Sullivan Fire Protection District.
Curtis Barker and Jake Hughes, members of the Sullivan FFA chapter, were named as recipients of FFA district awards. Barker was an award winner in small animal care and Hughes was a winner in emerging agricultural technologies. Read More

LLC Historic Reduction in Tuition

Lake Land College is taking a historic step in support of its students and the community by reducing tuition for next year and making college more affordable than ever during a time of rapidly expanding inflation.
The Lake Land College Board of Trustees is expected to set in-district tuition at $100 per credit hour, down from $110.50, during the regular meeting on Monday, March 14 at 6 p.m. The new tuition rate, which represents a near 10% reduction, will go into effect for the Summer 2022, Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 terms. Fees will stay the same. Read More

‘Headline-Speak’: What it is and Why we use it

I’ve been drowning in emails about headlines lately so, today, I’ll try to shed some light on them.
The emails haven’t been about political slants, sensationalism or misspellings in headlines but rather how to interpret them.
As I’ve noted on a number of occasions, headlines are an art form. They’re not easy to do well, especially in one- or two-column spaces.

Tense
“Newspaper headlines state that a person dies, when the person died. It’s not an ongoing action, but finished, complete, done,” wrote reader Deborah Gaither. “Take the headline: ‘Colin Powell, exemplary general stained by Iraq claims, dies.’”
I’ve known since the days I unabashedly wore inch-wide leather ties to work that headlines are written in a form of present tense, but I don’t recall ever being asked why — or bothering to investigate. Read More

Storm leaves damage in its wake
