Scot Hollonbeck won a silver medal in the 1500 in the Olympic exhibition wheelchair race in Atlanta. Defending champion Claude Issoat of France edged out Hollonbeck in a race that took place in a downpour. Hollonbeck continued to stay in Atlanta for the 1996 Paralympic Games. Scot, the grandson of Lefty and Wilma Hollonbeck of rural Sullivan, holds the world record in the 800 meters and won two gold medals and a silver medal in the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. New Masking Recommendations

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced last Tuesday that it is fully adopting updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) masking recommendations to protect against COVID-19 and the Delta variant.CDC recommends that everyone, including fully vaccinated individuals, wear a mask in public indoor setting in areas with substantial and high transmission. CDC is also recommending universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Read More

The Sullivan Fire Department visited Park Rec at Wyman Park on Thursday, July 29. The department did a cookout for the children and then sprayed water from their ladder truck and let them run through it.

Theresa Pawlicki tells me she is 78 years old and has a daughter who is a stickler about proper English, so she lives in mild fear of saying the wrong thing.
But that’s not why Theresa wrote to me.
“I have to tell you the one phrase I hear so much today that is extremely irritating is ‘No problem!’ I assume it’s meant to take the place of ‘Thank you,’” she wrote. “When I hear it, it brings chills to me and it is insulting. It’s easier to say ‘Thank you’ as it’s only two syllables where ‘No problem’ is three.”

The summer between high school graduation and freshman year of college is cause for excitement and a feeling of pride. There are many celebratory events to attend and possibly even a college orientation. While it is a milestone that is filled with enthusiasm, it can also take a toll on the student’s mental well-being especially if they are going away to school later that summer.

Coles County Man Sentenced

Alexander Fritz, 25, of Charleston has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
At a hearing July 23, Judge Gary Webber accepted a plea in which Fritz pled guilty to the offense of armed violence, a Class X Felony, Moultrie County case 21-CF-37. Read More
