Seth Rakestraw

•March 17, 2021•
Windsor Jr./Sr. High School recently announced the February Students of the Month as Seth Rakestraw and Toby Kemper.
Seth Rakestraw is an eigth grade student and is the son of John and Angie Rakestraw. Seth participates in Scholastic Bowl and is interested in music. He plans to pursue a career in music after high school.

Toby Kemper

Toby Kemper is a senior and is the son of Ron and Viola Kemper. Toby has been involved in Eco Team, Art Club, Physics Club and Band. After high school Toby would like to make a career of wildlife photography.

Webinar Series Offers Keys to Embrace Aging

What you do today influences your future. Learn how to take care of yourself now, to embrace aging and mature gracefully, successfully and with increased longevity. University of Illinois Extension will be presenting the webinar series “Keys for Embracing Aging” using the videoconferencing platform Zoom. This program is a free 12-part series designed to help aging adults develop strategies for taking care of themselves through the years. The session will be held on Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, beginning March 25 through April 29 and September 2 through October 7. Sessions cover topics including positive attitude, nutrition, socialization, brain health, stress management and safety. Layette Sentenced to Six Years in Prison

‘Dictionary Man’ Gets the Last Word, Fittingly

I have many pen pals in my line of work and, of course, I quickly developed a running discourse with a guy who calls himself “The Dictionary Man.”
Ted Utchen would write to me monthly at least, sometimes twice in the same week, with imponderables, injustices, tattles and helpful hints.
I wrote about Ted nine times — meaning I skipped writing about his correspondences dozens of times over the years — and recall leading one column with “Ted Utchen has a bee in his bonnet.”
He usually did, but he was playful about it. He called me, variously, “Grammar Granny,” “Mr. Grammarian,” “St. Grammarian” and just plain “Grammar.” Read More

Pediatrician Susan Mangahas gives new meaning to the term “family doctor.” Born in the Phillippines, she is the daughter of two physicians and sister of another. Dr. Felicitas Aguila, her mother, practices pediatrics in the Phillippines. Her father, Dr. Sosepatro Aguila, is a surgeon. Her sister, Dr. Maria Aguila-Manalo, practices pediatrics in Morton Grove. Her husband, Edmund Mangahas, is completing his residency in anesthesiology at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago. Susan Mangahas just joined the staff at the Sullivan Family Care Center at Field-Wright Medical Facility. Read More

LLC to Host Preview Open Houses

Lake Land College will host in-person Preview Open Houses in March and April.
Potential students who are interested in touring campus and learning more about Lake Land College are encouraged to attend. The event also includes a Q&A session and the option to talk to representatives from college departments of interest.
Registration is now open at lakelandcollege.edu/visit/. Attendance is limited to 20 prospective students and one guest each. Due to the safety protocols surrounding COVID-19, advanced registration is required. Walk-in registrations cannot be accommodated at this time.

Please Forgive My Flagitious Language

I might have mentioned that I am not a Bible scholar, though I did read it, along with the awful allegory “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” and some political science tomes that were on the family bookshelf of my youth because I would read anything at eye level.
From time to time, though, I find myself running through a passage in the Bible in search of a word.
“I found a great word in 2 Maccabees in the Bible,” reader Cynthia Cwynar wrote to me. “‘Flagitious,’ meaning ‘criminal, villainous.’

Sullivan Boy Scout Troop # 39 was at the ready with delicious food in Kirby’s parking lot for famished deal-seekers on Friday, June 5th, during Sullivan’s annual Townwide Rummage Sale. On the menu were brats, steak sandwiches, pork chops, chips, sides, and cool beverages.
