I didn’t have time to write a column last week, but I did have plenty of time to think about it while vacationing in various parts of my house.
And now that I’m back to spending the majority of my days in my dining room “office,” I plan to declutter my mind of several disparate musings.

Brussel sprouts?
We carried a food section cover piece last week on all of the things you can do with Brussels sprouts, which one can surmise involves several pounds of bacon, brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

City employees were given a flat $750 annual raise by the Sullivan City Council. The commissioners were authorized to give the department superintendents any additional increase over the $750 if they deemed it appropriate.
Sullivan’s new elementary school was just short of completion, Sullivan School Superintendent Rich Voltz told the school board. The new school would be ready in February if it weren’t for the fact that the gym floor isn’t complete.
Sullivan Middle School Principal Nancy Schaljo accepted a donation from Ray Loy of Jerry’s IGA and Tony Kenworthy of the Central State Coca Cola Bottling Co. The supermarket and Coke donated a nickel from every 12 pack of the soft drink sold during September for worthy projects at the school. Read More

News Progress Posted on December 30, 2020 by webmasterDecember 29, 2020

25 Years Ago This Week

The city of Sullivan and the surrounding area was paralyzed by a dangerous snow storm. Seven or more inches of snow has fallen to the ground on top of what was left from the snowstorm which hit the week before Christmas. The snow, combined with brisk winds, has left people stranded in the country and in town.
The initial fundraising campaign of the recently formed Sullivan Community Education Foundation is off to a very strong start. Despite having been kicked off only a few weeks ago, the Charter Donor Campaign has been receiving a steady stream of cash contributions and pledges. Read More

Comma, Comma, Comma, Comma Comma Chameleon

When you’re in the mood for a little grammatical navel-gazing, it’s fun to consider how the smallest things can have a large impact.
Let’s focus today on the comma.
Commas wear many colors and can do many things. There, did I justify my anachronistic headline?

Attribution
I often admonish writers to include a second comma when putting attribution in the middle of a sentence. Without it, the sentence can change meaning.
For instance: If you stand on your head and drink a grape Nehi, Bob said, you will get stomach cramps.
This sentence is properly attributed to Bob, with commas wrapped around the attribution. Bob is describing the stomach cramps one will get as a result of drinking soda while standing on his head. Read More

How to Avoid Foggy Eyeglasses

News Progress Posted on December 23, 2020 by webmasterDecember 23, 2020

•December 23, 2020•
Billions of people across the globe need eyeglasses to drive a car, read a book, watch television, and perform a host of other tasks of daily life.
Although glasses are highly effective, people who wear them understand they may have to make a few concessions while doing so. Unlike contact lenses, which sit directly on the eye, glasses rest on the bridge of the nose. They may slightly impede peripheral vision or even slip down if not properly fitted. Those accustomed to wearing glasses in the cold weather understand fogging of the lenses is a nuisance they may be forced to confront. That nuisance became even more profound when masks became a must-have accessory to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Read More

Capitol News Illinois

Gov. JB Pritzker announced Friday that more than 17,000 doses of the first coronavirus vaccine have been administered to Illinois frontline health care workers outside of Chicago, up from 3,500 doses on Thursday.
Pritzker said Illinois hospitals could begin to receive shipments of a second COVID-19 vaccine, developed by the drug company Moderna, as early as next week. That announcement comes one day after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s advisory committee recommended the use of the Moderna vaccine in people ages 18 and older. The FDA on Friday evening granted Emergency Use Authorization for the Moderna vaccine.
The first vaccine, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, received such authorization from the FDA last week. Read More
