A couple of days ago was Election Day.
Or, I should say, Election Month began yesterday.
This will be a month of math the likes of which we’ve never seen.
You might even hear a candidate claim something along the lines of “My opponent has three times less votes than I do. There is no way he is going to catch up with early voting and provisional ballots, so let’s just stop counting now.”
You would be right to screech, “Hey, Moses, it’s ‘fewer than,’ not ‘less than.’”
And I would respond: “Sure, but that is not going to save that nonsensical sentence.” Read More

Harvest season is the time of year when some of the best aspects of Midwest agriculture can be experienced by all. Pumpkin patches and apple orchards in Illinois are open for visitors and the golden-brown fields of mature crops line rural roads across the state. But along with these markers of fall come the dangers of transportation incidents associated with harvest. Read More

One Book One Sullivan students have been busy reading! This team of students and teachers did not let a pandemic get in the way of reading titles from the 2020 Rebecca Caudill List! This group is more determined than ever to choose a book both the students and community will equally enjoy. Even though meetings began all virtually, by the end of summer, we were able to combine in person and virtual meetings together so that all members could participate. This year’s Rebecca Caudill List was full of amazing stories! The OBOS members have narrowed the list to 3 choices: The Only Road by Alexandra Diaz, Nowhere Boy by Katherine Marsh and Resistance by Jennifer Nielsen. Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

The Little Theatre on the Square was installing a 20 ton air conditioning unit and heating system. The Little Theatre on the Square had received two separate grants of $18,970 from the Illinois Arts Council for operating support and a grant of $15,032 from the Tourism Attraction Program, a program of the Illinois Bureau of Tourism Dept of Commerce and Community Affairs to pay for the heat/air project.

2020…Sullivan’s One Hundred and Seventy-fifth Anniversary, Part 3

News Progress Posted on October 21, 2020 by webmasterOctober 21, 2020

•October 21, 2020•
This series of articles noting Sullivan’s 175th anniversary is focused on answering one question. Why did voters of the new county of Moultrie choose an empty spot at Asa’s Point near a mosquito and rattlesnake infested lake as their county seat instead of the booming village of Nelson (a. k. a. East Nelson or Old Nelson) just four miles to the southeast?
The 1881 Combined History of Shelby and Moultrie Counties says Nelson lost because it was not in the center of the county. It also said that unclear land titles caused the whole town to be shifted a quarter mile east and renamed East Nelson a few years before the county seat fight. Read More

County Clerk Urges Voters To Apply Soon

News Progress Posted on October 21, 2020 by webmasterOctober 21, 2020

•October 21, 2020•
Moultrie County Clerk Georgia England is urging voters to apply as soon as possible if they want to cast their ballots by mail for the November 3 General Election.
The statutory deadline to submit a mail-in ballot application is October 29, which is also the last day in which a ballot can be mailed out. England, along with other Election Authorities and state leaders, recommend voters apply much earlier so Clerk’s offices and the USPS have sufficient time to deliver the ballots. More people this Election than any other Election have chosen to Vote By Mail. England states that if you wish to Vote By Mail, don’t delay, do it now. Voters are encouraged to complete and return their ballots as soon as possible and not wait. Read More

Sullivan Schools have parent-teacher conferences coming up on Tuesday, October 27 and Thursday, October 29. This is an opportunity for parents to visit our schools and spend time learning about the happenings in their children’s classrooms. All IDPH guidelines regarding masks, social distancing, and cleaning will be followed. New for this year, parents will also have the option to attend parent teacher conferences remotely if they choose. This is the third year that we have hosted conferences on two evenings instead of an evening followed by a morning. The change was made after analyzing attendance during previous conference days.
