•October 9, 2019•
Recently a Raffle Extravaganza was held at Hydro-Gear, Sullivan. This raffle was organized as a fundraiser for Team: Karry-on-for-Kass, Kankakee Out of the Darkness Walk, sponsored by, The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
Cindy Wieferich works for Hydro-Gear and was grateful for the Sullivan plant’s support by raising $2,260 toward suicide prevention.
“My daughter Kassie, lost her battle with mental illness and ended her life, she was just 21,” Weiferch said.
“When I moved to the Sullivan area two years ago I was hesitant to talk about Kassie, I was afraid I would be judged as a mother, and I took a backseat to advocating suicide awareness.” Read More

Lake Shelbyvile Water Trail Flows

•October 2, 2019•

On Sunday, September 15, more than twenty kayakers gathered at Denham’s Pit near Allenville to launch Lake Shelbyville’s first Kayak Run.  The weather was nearly perfect for the event which kicked off at 1 pm.  Kayakers had transportation available for both them and their kayaks from the Sullivan Marina to the launch site.  Kayakers were able to spot dozens of pelicans and herons, three bald eagles, and numerous other wildlife as they navigated their way down approximately nine miles of the Kaskaskia River and Lake Shelbyville.
A subgroup of the Sullivan Spark Parks and Recreation Committee hosted the event.  It raised over $500, which the group hopes to use to help install a launch ramp near Denham’s Pit to make it easier to launch kayaks and possibly other watercraft.   An overarching goal for the group is to formalize a Lake Shelbyville Water Trail including sites along the Kaskaskia and West Okaw rivers that lead into Lake Shelbyville. For many in our community, the events of this past Friday will never be forgotten. The families of those who lost their lives will never be the same, and many others will be changed forever. From the emergency personnel who responded to the event to every parent whose heart stopped as they heard the news, you continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
It is amazing that in the midst of tragedy, we often see goodness shine through. The amount of support that our school and community has experienced has been astronomical. The list of people to thank seems endless. The care and sensitivity demonstrated by the first responders on the scene could not be paralleled. Read More

The Old Stem-Winder Railroad Watches

News Progress Posted on September 25, 2019 by webmasterSeptember 25, 2019

•September 25, 2019•
By Jerry L. Ginther
NP Guest Columnist

What is the difference between the old and newer watches used by railroad workers? Being a former railroad employee from many years past, I happen to own an old “stem-winder,” a name applied to watches of that era, the movements of which were powered by a spring. A stem protruding from the top of the watch was used to wind the main spring, hence the name stem-winder. Subsequent to that era when all watches were powered by a main spring, a stem was still necessary to change or set the time on most watches, including those powered by battery.
So what were the significant differences between the old railroad watches and a pocket watch carried by other gentlemen? Here are a few. Railroad watches were required to comply with a standard set of rules pertaining to watches that were used in service by railroad employees. The rules required that my watch be inspected by a jeweler, designated by the company to be authorized and qualified to examine railroad watches, to determine their integrity and dependability.
