New Rules Streamline Community Water Supply Requirements

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) Director Alec Messina today announced the Agency has submitted proposed new rules to the Illinois Pollution Control Board and revisions to other parts of Subtitle F of the Illinois Pollution Control Board’s rules addressing community water supplies. Editor’s Note: Taylor Cole, known in Sullivan as “Tad”, attended Sullivan school system K thru 12, graduating in 1984. Cole enjoyed the friendship of a proud sailor Robert Best and has many friends in the Moultrie County area. Rich Voltz had a strong influence on Cole’s life during his high school years. Taylor Cole, currently President, Commercial Off-the-Road (OTR), has been named President, Firestone Building Products, LLC, effective August 14, 2017, reporting to Bill Thompson, Chief Operating Officer, Bridgestone Americas. Taylor succeeds Tim Dunn, who announced his intent to retire, effective October 1. Taylor and Tim will work closely to ensure a smooth transition. Read More
25 Years Ago This Week
A promissory note written by Abraham Lincoln was discovered in the Moultrie County Courthouse by researcher William D. Beard for The Lincoln Legal Papers, a state research project on Lincoln’s 25 years in law practice. A group of jurors got to examine the note dated May 28, 1851 which indicated county residents H. C. Carney and Joseph Clark owed Lincoln a total of $50 within five months. One $20 payment was made in Nov. 1851 and another $20 in June 1852 with no final payment recorded.
The mayor of Findlay Ohio, the namesake for Findlay, Illinois, spoke during the village’s 100 Years of Pride celebration. Train rides, a medicine show, carriage rides and street singers were featured during the three day centennial observation. Read More

Northern Illinois experienced heavy rain and widespread flooding in July. Meanwhile, parts of central and southern Illinois experienced dry weather that caused crop damage, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois.
On average, however, the statewide precipitation was 4.81 inches, which is 0.73 inches above normal.
In the northwestern part of the state, the average precipitation for July was 7.83 inches, and the third wettest July on record. The average wettest July on record was in 1902 with 9.21 inches. Read More

OSF HealthCare and Presence Health have signed a Letter of Intent for OSF HealthCare to take ownership of Presence Covenant Medical Center in Urbana and Presence United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville, Illinois.
The two organizations are currently finalizing the agreement and will then seek all necessary regulatory and canonical approvals. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of calendar year 2018. Read More

First-year students at Millikin University will get a jump-start on their college experience during Millikin’s 2017 First Week program Aug. 15-20.
First Week is designed especially for new Millikin students to prepare them for what is ahead before classes begin on Monday, Aug. 21. The First Week experience teaches students about what is expected in the college environment, and how to best engage with the Millikin community to ensure success. Students will learn about student organizations, studying abroad, internships, student media, intramurals and recreation, community service and many more programs.

The Moscow Ballet returns to Decatur, Ill., after eight years to perform the holiday classic the “Great Russian Nutcracker” on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Kirkland Fine Arts Center on Millikin University’s campus.
The immersive Christmas classic will feature 40 professional dancers, hand-selected area young dancers, the Millikin Children’s Choir, and a full musical accompaniment from the 65-member Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra (MDSO) under the direction of Dr. Sergey Bogza. Read More

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville will conduct a dove hunt Saturday, September 2 at Whitley Creek and South Sand Creek dove fields. Hunts will take place at 6:30-11:30 a.m. and 2-7 p.m. A permit is required to participate and may be picked up at the Lake Shelbyville Project Office Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. or obtained online athttp://www.mvs.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Lake-Shelbyville/Recreation/Hunting/.
Applicants will be able to indicate their preference for the hunt. Permit applications must be received at the Lake Shelbyville Project Office no later than 4 p.m. August 14. A $30 permit issuance fee will be assessed per blind (good for two hunters), payable at the time of application. Read More
