Hullabaloo Returns to the Sullivan Square

Hullabaloo on The Square in Sullivan is coming Sunday, September 18 from 2-5 p.m.
This annual event features free entertainment and activities for families including laser tag, inflatables such as bungee run, bounce house, joust, obstacle course, rock climbing wall, carnival games and contests, candy and prizes, and face painting.
Area vendors will sell food and beverages including polish sausages, corn dogs, tacos, lemon shakeups and soda.
The sixth annual Hullabaloo sponsored generously by local businesses and organized by New Life Church has been a huge success year after year, and attendance has grown to nearly 2,000 last year.
Tiffany Burgess of New Life spearheads the event and is assisted by volunteers from New Life and the community. She encourages the public to attend hours of unlimited use of games and inflatables. Read More
Standerfer Completes Ph.D.

Zakry Standerfer, of rural Sullivan, recently completed his Ph.D. at Indiana State University. Standerfer successfully defended his dissertation, The Illinois Teacher Pension Crisis Impact on Illinois Teacher Attrition, before his dissertation committee May 17.
He will participate in the December commencement ceremony at Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. Read More

Nominations Open for Illinois Job Honor Awards

The Illinois Job Honor Awards is accepting nominations for its first annual awards event, to be conducted November 30, 2016 in Lisle, IL. The Awards will celebrate Illinoisans who have overcome significant barriers to employment and the employers who hire them.
Founded in Iowa in 2014, the awards are spreading nationwide under the banner of America’s Job Honor Awards. Previous honorees have overcome physical and mental disabilities, criminal convictions, limited English proficiency and long-term unemployment in their struggle for employment.
“Our society celebrates lottery winners, movie stars and professional athletes,” notes founder Kyle Horn. “We rarely hear inspiring stories of individuals whose lives are transformed through the hard work and perseverance that leads to meaningful employment.

SCWC Plans for Homecoming Chili Supper

Plans are underway for the annual Sullivan Civic Women’s Club homecoming chili supper October 7 in the Sullivan American Legion. Profits from the fundraiser go to the scholarship fund. Last year for the first time the club offered a 50/50 drawing as a way to raise more money for scholarships awarded to local high school seniors. Read More

Millikin Kicks off Academic Year

First-year students at Millikin University will get a jump start on their college experience during Millikin’s 2016 First Week program scheduled Aug. 16-21.
First Week is designed for first-year students to become acclimated and immersed in their new Millikin home before classes begin on Monday, Aug. 22. The First Week experience teaches students what is expected in the college environment and how to best engage in the Millikin community to ensure success.
First Week activities begin with Move-In Day for residential students on Tuesday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
An integral part of the First Week experience is the First-Year University Seminar. University Seminar is intended to be a unique learning opportunity for first-year students entering Millikin University. The seminar introduces students to college-level academic inquiry by focusing on critical and ethical reasoning, and reflection. Read More
Dr. Kohlmann Joins SBL Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

Sarah Bush Lincoln is pleased to welcome Orthopedic Surgeon James Kohlmann, MD, to its medical team.
After caring for area residents in a private practice for more than 24 years, he is excited to bring his expertise to Sarah Bush Lincoln where he began his career in 1992. “I can’t tell you how happy I am to be back. It’s like coming home,” he said.
Dr. Kohlmann looks forward to working alongside Orthopedic Surgeons Louis Mendella, DO, DC, Donald Sandercock, DO, AOAO, and Jeremy Stevens, MD, at SBL Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. “I bring a fair amount of experience to the table and I’m very good at the procedures I do,” he said. “I love sharing what I know with my colleagues, and I think they’re just as excited to share what they know with me.”
Having grown in Champaign, Dr. Kohlmann earned a bachelor’s degree in physics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and a medical degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago. He completed an internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at University of Illinois-affiliated hospitals in Chicago, where he gained experience working in the trauma units of several Cook County hospitals.
