Entries Accepted for High School Art Contest

Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) is now accepting entries for the 2016 Congressional Art Competition. The contest is open to high school students in the 15th Congressional District. Entries are due by April 15.

“This is an annual competition that we are pleased to participate in,” Shimkus said. “The winning artwork from my district will be displayed in Washington, DC, in a tunnel that connects the Cannon House Office Building to the Capitol. Hundreds of staff and visitors will see the artwork each day.” Read More

Hoverboards May Be Fire Hazard

The Office of the State Fire Marshal would like to warn Illinois residents about fire hazards that have been posed by self-balancing motorized scooters known as “hoverboards.” Hoverboards were one of the most popular gifts of the holiday season but have come under recent scrutiny due to a number of incidents in which they have caught fire while charging or while in use.

Hoverboards are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Historically, lithium-ion batteries have had fire-related problems in laptops, cell phones and electrical systems in airplanes. They have been known to burst into flames when recharging and sometimes while in use. Read More

Smyser Mission Trip Holds Windsor Auction

Smyser Christian Church will host an auction at Windsor High School Feb. 27 with proceeds going toward their upcoming mission trip. There will be items donated by more than 100 contributors including Agri-Fab, Chicago White Sox, Magic House in St. Louis, Thirty-One, Shedd Aquarium, Big Splash Adventure and Ace Hardware.

Items include free tickets, signed photographs, metal signs, yard cart, jogging stroller, artwork, washer/dryer, table & chairs, outdoor storage cabinet, and much more (see list of donors below). There will also be a coffee/snack bar, three time Octoberfest champion chili by Sherry Warren and Tim Luallen, and students will provide live music for entertainment. Read More

Young Artists, Guest Conductor to Lead MDSO Performance

The Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra (MDSO) will continue its 2015-16 performance season on Saturday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Kirkland Fine Arts Center.

The performance on March 5 is the second of two guest-conducted concerts featuring one of the finalists for the position of Music Director and Conductor of the MDSO. The guest conductor on March 5 is Dr. Sergey Bogza.

The concert will also feature performances from Millikin student soloists Jared Rixstine (piano), a senior piano performance major from Washington, Ill., and Amy Mazzeo (soprano), a senior vocal performance major from Rolla, Mo. The students were named winners of Millikin’s annual Concerto/Aria Competition in Oct. 2015.

The concert will open with the Overture to Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio.” Jared Rixstine will be featured in the first movement of Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 1,” while Amy Mazzeo will be the soloist on Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim” and Rossini’s “Una voce poco fa.” Following an intermission, the MDSO will conclude the concert with a performance of Tchaikpsky’s “Symphony No. 4.” Read More

Roxy Theater Shows “The First Rosa”

Annual Wine Tasting and Vendor Expo Set

A Wine Expo and Vendor Fair sponsored by Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68 will be held 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28 at the American Legion located at 8 E. Strain St. Proceeds will go to support veterans and local community organizations.

Volunteers Needed for Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Improvement Day

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will place donated Christmas trees and artificial porcupine structures into Lake Shelbyville March 19 to enhance the fisheries for years to come. Volunteers with boats are needed to help place trees in the lake at designated locations. Volunteers on shore are also needed to help build the porcupine structures and bundle and place the trees and porcupine balls in the boats. To volunteer, meet at the Lone Point Recreation Area boat ramp parking lot at 8:45 a.m. or 8 a.m. if you plan to bring a boat.  Read More

Time Change for Foodbank Distribution

Monsanto and Eastern Illinois Foodbank will distribute a truckload of food from the Eastern Illinois Foodbank to hungry area families. The distribution will be held at Sullivan VFW on State Highway 32 from 10 a.m.-noon March 12. All Moultrie County residents who meet income eligibility criteria are welcome. Those attending are asked to bring bags or boxes to transport food. A representative from Eastern Illinois Foodbank will be present to assist families and individuals interested in applying for SNAP benefits. Read More
