Windsor Students for January

Sophomore Mikayla Haddock, daughter of Mike and Tracy Haddock, and seventh grader Jessica Rauch, daughter of Brian and Carmen Rauch, have been named named January students of the month at Windsor Jr./Sr. High School.
Haddock is involved in volleyball, student council, FFA, Pep Club, Spanish Club and is the sophomore class vice-president. Rauch participates in volleyball.

State Receives Extension for Federal Disaster Declaration
Deadline for request is now Feb. 26

The state of Illinois this week requested and received an extension for submitting a request to the federal government for a major disaster declaration related to severe storms and flooding in late December and early January. The original deadline for such submission was Feb. 12. The state now has until Feb. 26 to request federal assistance.
“In some parts of the state, floodwaters only recently subsided to the point where we were able to accurately document the damages,” said James K. Joseph, director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA). “We just concluded joint damage assessments with FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration earlier this week and need more time to thoroughly review that information in order to better define the true impact of the event.” Read More

Three Moultrie countians are among eight Lake Land College students recently inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, a national academic honors society.The three are Marsha Hutchcraft and Jerry Price, both of Sullivan, and Marilyn Thompson of Lovington.
Four students from Moultrie County have been named to the deans’ lists for the fall semester at the University of Illinois. They are Susan Lee Ozier of Bethany and Sullivan students, Tamara Kristen Dabbs, Sara Ann Elder and Grant Evans Tice.
Lori Moody of Sullivan, a student at Bradley University in Peoria, has been awarded a Bielfeldt Valedictorian Scholarship for 1990-91. Bielfeldt Scholarships are awarded to Bradley students who were valedictorians of their high school graduating class and have an ACT composite score of 28 or more.
Two University of Illinois students from Moultrie County were among the 1,721 students earning degrees in January. Sue Patrice Buckner of Sullivan earned her master of social work degree, and Kevin A. McReynolds of Bethany earned his bachelor of science degree in engineering.
Six Sullivan Middle School students will advance to the Mattoon Elks Hoop Shoot competition at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Mattoon Junior High gym. Chris Kottwitz led all of the Sullivan shooters and won his age group when he completed 20 of 25 attempts. Sally Mundy, Phil Turner, Travis Nolte, Tiffany Bone and Melissa Bone also won the chance to advance in their respective age groups. Read More

Special Father-Daughter Dance Night At Little Theatre

The Little Theatre on the Square is hosting a Daddy-Daughter Dance 6-8 p.m. Saturday, February 20. The event will be held at Cathrine’s Gallery, Gifts & More at 5 West and The Little Theatre’s dance studio, both located on Jefferson St. in Sullivan.
“We are expanding outreach efforts, and we wanted to do something that ties in with our dance and drama mission,” said John Stephens, executive director and producer at The Little Theatre on the Square. The idea for a daddy-daughter dance came from a newly formed advisory committee working on increased awareness and support for the Little Theatre.
Girls of all ages are welcome to attend the dance with their father, grandfather, or father-figure. About 60 couples have registered for the dance. Registration ends Tuesday, February 16. Read More
Important to File Early for Student Aid

While the current budget delay has made this a challenging time for higher education in Illinois, financial aid is available to help make college possible for Illinois students—if they apply for it. As part of Financial Aid Awareness Month, students are reminded to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)—the form that determines a student’s eligibility for most federal, state, and college financial aid programs. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), the state agency that works with students and families year-round to increase college access, is offering a host of free workshops and other assistance to assist students in completing the form as soon as possible.
“In the 2014-15 school year, students in Illinois received more than $1.5 billion in state and federal aid for college,” said Eric Zarnikow, executive director of ISAC. “We know that the delay in funding the state’s Monetary Award Program (MAP) for the 2015-16 school year has created significant uncertainty for students and schools, but if students want to be considered for almost any form of financial aid, they should not delay in filing their FAFSAs for the upcoming school year.”

Okaw Valley Drama Club Hosts Potato Bar

The Okaw Valley High School Drama Club will host a potato bar dinner before the OVHS boys’ basketball game 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 16. The menu will include baked potato with topping choices of taco meat, chili, broccoli, cheese, sour cream, bacon and chives, a variety of dessert choices and tea and lemonade.
The OV Timberwolves will play the Argenta-Oreana Bombers and will also be celebrating senior night for the boys’ basketball team, cheerleaders and band. Read More
